Parent-Proof notes for James Poteet
There is a deed whereby John Poteet mentioned several of this name including James and without studying things too much and needing a place to put James, I have guessed James was the son of John. According to the consensus of the Internet, John’s son James married Elizabeth Crabtree (that marriage recorded in 1748 in the St Johns/St Georges church records).
There also was a James Potee who with wife Elizabeth baptized four children at St Johns/St Georges in 1720, 1722, 1725 and 1728. I have guessed that he was Francis’s son although if Francis died before 1688, James was well into his thirties when he baptized these children.
It seems pretty clear they were two different James.
There is what seems to be a well researched book The Crabtrees of Southwest Virginia on Ancestry that traces descendants of the Crabtree family of St Johns/St Georges who moved to Virginia in the mid-1750’s accompanied by Elizabeth Crabtree and her husband James Poteet.
DNA Evidence notes for James Poteet
I am a DNA cousin to two different persons who claim descent from Francis Poteet through his son John, John’s son James and in one case James’ son Squire Thomas Richard Poteet and the other case James’ son William. They both say that James was born in 1720 in Bal Co and died in 1783 in either Bedford or Franklin County, VA.
The apparently well researched Crabtree book shows James removing to Virginia in the mid-1750’s obviously taking all his family with him. So I don’t see how it’s possible that I descend from James as how did Sarah get back to Baltimore County to marry there in 1833?
Parent-Proof notes for Elizabeth (Spouse 1)
The Crabtree book says the Poteet family lived on an adjoining plantation to the Crabtree family.
