Mandilla’s death certificate says her parents were John Herbst and Elizabeth Saul (?). But Census and her own birth record give her mother’s name as Mary.

In 1850, Sarah Herbst lives with John, from the ages likely his mother.

Sarah is buried in the same cemetery as John and fro her tombstone she the wife of Samuel who died in Feb 1850. It all fits.

I think it a safe guess that John was the son of Samuel and Sarah.

1850. John Herbst age 32 lived n District 6, Carroll Co, MD with Mary 29, John E 6, Maudella 4, Jacob 1 and Sarah Herbst 54.

1880. John Harbtz age 63 ives in Carroll Co, MD with Mary 58, Mary 17, Edward 36, Mandilla (wife of Edward) 34, Laura 7, Frank 5 and Ida 1. Also present is Elizabeth Sauble described as John’s mother-in-law, thus explaining the faulty death certificate of Mandilla.

1900. John Hermitage 80 lives in Manchester, Carroll, MD as father-in-law to David H Leese whose wife was Mary E age 37. She the Mary age 17 from 1880. Also present is Ida Herbst now 21.

John Herbst 10 Feb 1820-10 Feb 1901 on find-a-grave in Manchester, Carroll Co, MD with wife Mary. I assume it’s the right John and Mary.

Some clues that it is are that Ida 1878-1957 is there.

Also Sarah 1797-1867 is there, she the wife of Samuel who died in 1850 and thus the wrong inference she is the Sarah living with John in 1850, his mother.
