My Comments notes for Asbury Slade
From the Baltimore County Democrat 11 Feb 1893. “The will of Asbury Slade was filed. To Elizabeth Slade, wife of Christopher Slade, $1,000; to sister, Ann Lytle, of Illinois, $1,800; to brother, Crayton Slade, $500; to nephew, Asbury Slade, $1,500 and five shares of stock in the Harford National Bank of Belair, and five shares in the National Bank of Stewartstown; to the three children of the late William C. Wiley, viz., John R., William R. and Asbury B. Wiley, $100 each, to be paid when they arrive at the age of twenty-one years. The rest of the property is left to his brother, Christopher Slade. Letters testamentary were granted to Christopher Slade and Christopher Columbus Slade.”
Becky Curry, whose interest in her family is more expansive than my focus just on our direct ancestors, explained to me that Asbury married William Wiley’s widow Caroline and the Wiley children mentioned were hers by her first marriage. This will is quite typical for a man who had no children of his own -- he left everything to siblings or their widows or children and his step-children.
