Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for Henry Martz (P2d)
J L Floyd says this about Henry. "Henry Martz, son of David and Barbara Miller, was born on the homestead in Shamokin Township and was a farmer. He stayed on in Northumberland County when the rest of his siblings moved to Dayton, OH. He married Elizabeth Fagely, daughter of Christian and Magdalena, pioneers of Shamokin Township. He is buried at St Peter's. They had: Hettie, Katie, Mary Ann, George, Solomon and Nathan."
David’s homestead actually was in Augusta Township — on Shamokin Creek. Floyd was a little geographically confused.
Allen Tallman lists the same children for Henry as does Floyd, and adds birth dates: the range is Catharine the oldest born 1814 to Mary Ann the youngest born 1825.
Henry was either David’s third or fourth oldest son, but I have a little arbitrarily placed Abraham as third, so Henry is designated P2d.
Relocated and Census Tracking notes for Henry Martz (P2d)
I can find Henry Martz in the 1820 Census in Augusta Township. He lived near David Sr. and David Jr. His widow was reported in Coal Township in 1850 living with two daughters and William Fegely, her brother I assume.
So the big mystery is where was Henry in 1830 and 1840?
Death and Find-a-Grave notes for Henry Martz (P2d)
Both Heber Gearhart and Joseph A Meiser did transcriptions of St Peter’s Blue Church and both say Henry died Aug 1848. But the truth is I have found no evidence of him after, say, 1825 if that was when daughter Annie was born.
It is especially troubling to me that I cannot find him in the 1830 or 1840 Census — and I know how to find people in Census. I have many search techniques that will uncover someone in Census even with a bad spelling. He is not in either Census.
There are additional indications, it seems to me, that Henry died well before 1848. My best guess is that he died in the mid-to-late 1820’s. J L Floyd says about Henry’s son Solomon that he was born in 1818 and at age 7 — 1825 interestingly — went to live with his uncle Solomon Fagely. And Floyd says that Henry’s son Nathan was born in 1820 and at age eighteen went to be a clerk in the store of his uncles Nathan and George Fagely. That would be 1838, about the time Henry’s brothers moved to Ohio.
In other families where I have seen this tremendous involvement of someone with uncles, it is because their father died young. I believe that Henry died closer to 1828 than 1848.
There is a memorial for him on find-a-grave at St Peter’s Blue Church with the dates from Gearhart and Meiser but tellingly there is no photo of the tombstone. What if Gearhart read it wrong and Meiser copied what he said?
I have walked that cemetery and searched for Henry with no luck. What is interesting is that Elizabeth is there on one of four large obelisks that stand together all in a row. There are five names on these four large obelisks.
William Fagely is on one of them, Elizabeth (Fagely) Martz (Henry’s wife) on a similar one and Reuben Fagely on another. They were siblings. And two names were on different faces of the fourth one -- Catharine Martz and Hannah Fagely. Hannah was yet another sibling to William, Elizabeth and Reuben and Catharine Martz was Elizabeth's daughter. Neither Hannah nor Catherine ever married.
William Fagely's will ties it all together. He named his brother Reuben, his sisters Elizabeth Martz and Hannah Fagely and his niece Catharine Martz. They had become one big family in my opinion.
But it is very curious to me that Henry’s name is not also inscribed on Elizabeth’s obelisk. He was forgotten or snubbed, wasn’t he? Even if he died in 1848, he was, say, 25 years gone before any of the other obelisks were erected, but if it was 1828 when he died, it makes more sense to me that he was basically forgotten.
Known Daughters notes for Henry Martz (P2d)
When his brother David died in Montgomery Co, OH in 1851, his probate records indicated that Henry had died and only listed Catherine, Solomon and Nathan as Henry's heirs. Any other daughters must have died young.
Catherine never married. From her tombstone at Blue Church as listed on find-a-grave, she was born 24 Jul 1814 and died on 2 Mar 1888.
Her will provided for the care and maintenance of the graves of her nieces Bella and Sophronia. She mentioned her brother Nathan. She also mentioned her niece Ida B V McConnell wife of William. Finally she mentioned William Martz and wife Annie — William was Nathan’s son.
Known Sons notes for Henry Martz (P2d)
J L Floyd listed three sons: George, Solomon and Nathan. The estate papers of Henry’s brother David listed only Solomon and Nathan, meaning George must have died before 1851. I think I have found George living with his brother Nathan in Mauch Chunk in 1850, so he must have died soon after that Census. I can track Solomon and Nathan further.
Parent-Proof notes for Elizabeth (Spouse 1)
J L Floyd says that Elizabeth was the daughter of Christian and Magdalena Fagely.
