J L Floyd says this about Jacob A. "Jacob A Mertz, a farmer along Mahantango Creek in Lower Mahanoy Twp, was born 18 Jul 1862 and as a young man engaged in the lumber business with his mill on Peter's Mountain. On 15 Sep 1883, Jacob married Emma Schaffer, daughter of Durrell and Anna (Snyder) Schaffer, and grandaughter of Isaac. Their 11 children: Martha O married Frank Witmer, Mary A married Reuben Wetzel (Herndon baker), William married Stella Witmer, Stella married Clarence Witmer, John N, Clarence E, Lloyd J, Neda Irene, Thelma M, Charles I and Emma K."
Floyd, whose work was published in 1911, also says Jacob was "a member of the Martz family which has been settled in Northumberland County for at least a century. He is a great grandson of Jacob Mertz, brother of David, who came with him into this section of Pennsylvania." I believe he has skipped a generation here and Jacob A is the great-great-grandson of the Jacob he is referring to who was possibly the brother of David.
