My Comments notes for 5G GF Bennett Hurst
The work of David Hurst ties all these early Hursts together. It gives Bennett’s birth date, the names of his parents, the first name of his wife and the fact that he was the father of both Shadrach and Ellen. I am in full agreement with his work.

Bennett died intestate and his estate entered administration 14 Jan 1797 with Eleanor (most certainly his wife) as Administratrix. Then there were several land records recorded in the early 1800’s where it appears that Bennett’s lands were parceled out to each of his heirs, per some agreement among them.

• For example, on 9 Aug 1798, Bennett Hurst, Jesse Hoshall and John Hurst had a tract of land called Hursts Lot surveyed and had the patent assigned to Benedict Hurst. This is the three, local, oldest heirs of Bennett (Sr.) taking care of, probably, their younger brother.

• In 1812, Eleanor Marsh, widow of James, of Wood County, Virginia, sold a tract of land patented by Bennett with the very unusual -- and often misspelled from that day forward -- name of Honorifuncidityability. Bennett patented it in 1796 and it says in the deed of conveyance of this property in 1830 from Jesse Hoshall to his son Ephraim that it had later “assended” to Eleanor Marsh.

• In 1813, all of Bennett’s heirs had the patent for land originally surveyed for Bennett called Curfman‘s Folly assigned to Jacob Hurst.

My sense of these various transactions is that Bennett’s children came to some agreement as to how his various tracts of land would be assigned and divided up among them as in the examples just given.
Research notes for Eleanor (Spouse 1)
The Hurst family history gives only her first name.
My Comments notes for Eleanor (Spouse 1)
Eleanor was named as Administratrix of Bennett’s estate when he died in 1797. This most certainly was his wife. Whether he only ever had one wife, whether she was the mother of his children, most importantly (for me) Shadrach and Mary Ellen, I don’t know. I do know that both Mary Ellen and Shadrach named a daughter Eleanor, so that gives some credibility to my belief that Eleanor in fact was their mother.
