Parent-Proof notes for Catharine (Spouse 1)
The tombstone of Catharine Mertz, wife of Daniel D Deibert, says she was the daughter of Samuel and Abigail (Ketner) Mertz. But when I found her find-a-grave memorial, she was not lnked to her husband (nor her parents). Then I found the find-a-grave memorial for her husband and he was linked to what I now know was his second wife (also named Catharine) and that Catherine II was incorrectly identified as Catharine Mertz. Worse, in my opinion, three chldren whose mother was the real Catharine Mertz were linked to the wrong Catharine including one born supposedly when Catherine II was only 14 years old.
I had to assemble and make known all these facts to get the whole mess resolved.
DANIEL D DEIBERT AND HIS TWO WIVES
WIFE #1 CATHARINE MERTZ
In the 1870 census, in North Mannheim, Schuylkill County, we find Daniel Deibert age 30, Catharine 29 and these Deibert children: Samuel age 7, Elizabeth 4 and Milton 1 month.
In the 1880 Census, now in Landingsville, Schuylkill County, we find D D Deibert age 40, Cathrine 38 and Daniel 18, Elizabeth 14 and Milton 10.
The find-a-grave memorial (50100332) for Catherine (Mertz) Deibert (1841-1881) has a photo of her tombstone which tells us she was the wife of D D Deibert and daughter of Samuel and Abegail Mertz. (It’s curious that her children put up this very nice tombstone for “Our Mother” but they did not do a similar thing for “Our Father”.)
WIFE #2 CATHERINE KEPNER
In the records of St Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Orwigsburg we find the 22 Oct 1887 marriage of Daniel D Deibert of Landingsville and Kate A Kepner.
In the 1900 Census, now in Auburn, Schuylkill County, we find Daniel Deibert age 60, Catharine 47 and Katie M Deibert age 11. Daniel and Catharine have been married 12 years and Catharine says she has had just one child who is still living (Katie).
The death certificate for Daniel D Deibert of Auburn says he died 18 May 1921 and had been born 21 Feb 1840 and was age 81 years, 2 month and 27 days. The informant was May Runkle.
The obituary of Daniel D Deibert of Auburn appeared in the Pottsville Republican newspaper dated Friday, 27 May 1921. He died Wednesday. Did they mean last Wednesday (18 May 1921)? He was 87 years, 2 months and 21 days old (was 27 misread as 21)? He is survived by his wife Kate nee Klepner, daughter Mrs. Runkel (her name was May or Katie Runkle), son Samuel and son Milton.
The North Carolina death certificate of Katie May (Deibert) Runkle says she was born in Pennsylvania, her parents were Daniel D Deibert and Catherine Kepner and she would be buried in Auburn, PA.
The 1936 death certificate of Samuel Deibert says his father was Daniel D Deibert and his mother Catharine Mertz.
The 1941 death certificate of Milton Deibert says his father was Daniel D Deibert, no mother named.
The 1920 death certificate of Elizabeth Abigail Deibert says her parents were Daniel D Deibert and Catherine Mertz. (She pre-deceased her father so wasn’t named in his obituary.) She was born in 1866, thus the Elizabeth age 4 in 1870 and 14 in 1880 living with Daniel and his first wife Catherine (Mertz).
