Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for George (Spouse 1)
In 2021, I first became aware of yet another “older” George Martz of Westmoreland County in addition to George (G1, 1761-1844) and two others who I think were possibly his grandsons: George (G1a1a, 1815-1888, son of Nicholas) and George (G1a2a, 1812-1894, son of William). I’ve not yet been able to learn very much about him but as I am about to do my annual website update, I want to include him in my database. Here’s what I know:
From the 1850 Census: George Marty age 50, Washington, Westmoreland, PA with Catherine 46, Daniel 10, William 8, Susan 3, and Rebecca 1. And then in 1860, George Marts 56, Washington, Westmoreland with Jane 45, William 18, Daniel 22.
And I also found the death certificate of William Gosser Marts born 9 May 1841 (PA), died 2 Aug 1914 (Springfield, Fayette, PA) s/o George Marts and Katherine Gosser — clearly the son William age 8 in 1850 and age 18 in 1860.
There is an SAR application that claims this George was the son of George (G1a). SAR applications are not as throughly vetted as people want to believe and so the claim there gives it not much credibility for me, but my working theory on this family is that all of the “next generation” Martzes of Westmoreland — and this new George fits that description — were sons of George (G1a). So I have made this new George his son also.
A review of the statements I make elsewhere about the early Census listings for George (G1a) clearly allow for George to have had more younger sons than I had previously identified, it was trying to justify the older sons I have given him in those early Census listings that was the problem.
This new George is designated G1a5 and at some point I need to edit my comments about the sons of George (G1a) to include reference to this new George but will update my website now even with this inconsistency.
Discrepancies notes for George (Spouse 1)
So having found this new George in 1850-1880, the question is where was he in 1840? His son Daniel was 10 in 1850 and 22 in 1860 (and then I lose track of him) so it would seem that George was married and had at least this one son in 1840.
So there really were four adult George Martz in Westmoreland in 1840.
There's George G1a and he is age 79.
There's George G1a1a (s/o Nicholas) and he is age 25.
There's George G1a2a (s/o William) and he is age 28.
And then there's this new George who is in his thirties.
But there are only two in the 1840 Census.
George Marts in Salem Township age 20-29. I'm pretty sure he is G1a2a. Age is right, he's not yet married, future wife is only 17. And Salem is where his father William lives.
Then there's one in Franklin Township. Now the Franklin Township George is sort of interesting. There's a male and a female age 20-29, a male under 5 and another male 70-79.
Not knowing about this new George, I had decided this was G1a1a, son of Nicholas, and since I can't find Nicholas in 1840, I thought the old guy was Nicholas. He was only age 56 but age in Census is sometimes wrong.
Note that in 1830, both Nicholas and George Sr. lived in Franklin.
So I now think there is a better solution to this. George in Franklin in 1840 might very well be this new George (though his age is misreported) with son Daniel and his father George, Sr., the 70-79 year old guy. (Actually the named George head of household might have been either George if they both were present but probably the younger.)
I still don't know where Nicholas is or his son George who I think was married and did in fact have one son by 1840.
I’m not changing my assertion that George in Franklin is the son of Nicholas…yet, but that day may come.
