Parent-Proof notes for Lydia Roth
In the records of the Jerusalem Union Church in Lehigh County, Elias Mertz married Lydia Roth 7 Sep 1830. This is the church where the family of Elias Mertz (H6a4) worshipped and were named in many church records — but I don’t think that marriage was him.
In the 1850 and later Census his wife was Sophia and death certificates of several children, including his oldest, confirm her name. Besides, that Elias was only 15 years old in 1830.
So while I see no other instance of Ely being associated with the Jerusalem Church, he was of Lehigh County and his burial record said Elias.
Lydia, like her husband, is elusive in Census. You’d think she might have been listed in the 1840 Census, but she wasn’t. She might well have been living with her parents so it is understandable she wasn’t a named head of household. But in 1850, she should be somewhere. Even if she had remarried, her son Charles A should have been listed. But no sign of either.
Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for Ely (Spouse 1)
I know him as Ely from his baptism at Longswamp Reformed. I know him as Elias from his burial record in the same cemetery as his parents.
He is designated P7a1.
At Jerusalem Church (in Salisbury), I found the marriage of Elias Mertz and Lydia Roth 7 Sep 1830. I think this is him too.
Complicating any search for Ely is that there was another Elias Mertz (H6a4) in the Lehigh County area at the same time. He was a little younger, born 1815, and this can help tell them apart but there could be record where t is not clear which Ely/Elias it was.
Relocated and Census Tracking notes for Ely (Spouse 1)
Like his father, he is elusive in Census. There was an Elias Mertz in South Whitehall Township in 1840, but that is after this Elias apparently died, so I believe this was the other Elias.
Death and Find-a-Grave notes for Ely (Spouse 1)
He is buried with his parents, he died young. As of summer 2015, he is not on find-a-grave.
