Parent-Proof notes for Amanda Mertz
The mystery starts with her being on find-a-grave, born 15 Aug 1868 (except as we shall see that is wrong) and died 19 May 1904. She’s buried at Gnaden Huetten and linked to her parents, Charles and Elizabeth (Hontz) Mertz and her husband Josiah Miller also all buried in that same cemetery.
That Amanda and Josiah were a couple is confirmed by several death certificates son their children including Milton H Miller born 1881 and James F Miller born 1883. And this whole family unit is confirmed by the 1900 Census listing where Joseph Miller (born Mar 1855 married 20 years ago) and Amanda Miller (born Aug 1856 married 20 year ago) live with sons Milton (born 1881) and James (born 1883). They lived in Lehighton.
There is a Lehighton death record for Amanda Miller who died 19 May 1904 and was age 46 [1858].
And then in the 27 May 1904 edition of the Lehighton Press, it says “Mrs. Josiah Miller died last Friday night at her home on Mahoning Street, aged 45 years, 9 months and 4 days. Her maiden name was Mertz and she was born in Beaver Run. Her husband died about two years ago and she is survived by four sons. Five brothers and two sisters also survive: Granville, John, Nathan, William and Alfred Mertz, all of Mahoning, Mrs. Ellen Gombert and Mrs. Mary Shabel. The funeral was held Monday afternoon Rev. J. H. Kuder officiating.”
From her date of death, the arithmetic computes to 15 Aug 1858.
