Parent-Proof notes for Catherine (Spouse 1)
Her obituary says she was maiden name Martz and was born in Union County. In 1860, the presence of Susan Martz and Mary Martz in her household and the fact that her obituary also says she has many relatives in Cambria County makes me believe, strongly, she was Samuel’s daughter.
From the Cambria County Freeman: “DEATH OF A MOST CHARITABLE LADY. - Mrs. Catharine C. Trotter, wife of Mr. Richard Trotter, of Hemlock, this county…to be buried at the Union Cemetery at Summitville, was a lady whose demise calls for more than a passing mention. She was born in Union County, Pa., in the year 1811, and came to this county in 1836. Her maiden name was Martz, and many of her relatives still reside in the vicinity of Lilly’s….Not having been blessed with children of her own, she was, nevertheless, a mother to the motherless….Plane No. 4 over which the procession passed from the head to the foot, was one continuous line of sleds and sleighs filled with sorrowing people, to say nothing of a hundred or more who followed the remains on foot. It is said to have been the largest cortege which was ever seen in that populous locality; and not a few were the tears shed by the vast concourse of sympathizers over the grave of one whom they had revered in life and whom they now mourn in death.”
