My Comments notes for Isaac Mirts (U2b1)
Isaac Mirts is on find-a-grave and in 2017 I heard from a descendant of his who believed the name had been corrupted to Mirts over the years, and that the family originated in Pennsylvania and so she wondered if I could help her determine if he was a Mertz descendant.
She wrote: “My mother was a Mirts. We always suspected that the name had been anglicized. My grandfather was Ernest Ray Mirts, born in New Bloomfield MO, my mom was born in Fulton, MO. My great-grandfather was Ernest Samuel Mirts, who married May Smith from Illinois, but they lived in New Bloomfield MO, or maybe Tebbetts MO. My great-great grandfather, Joseph Snider Mirts, was born in 1860 in PA, died 1935 in MO, his wife, Dora Frances Edwards, also born in Illinois, 1865, died 1934 MO. My great-great-great grandfather, Isaac Mirts (Mortz on the 1880 census, I believe), born 1812 PA, died 1893 Callaway County MO, His wife, Lydia (Lytta, Linda) E. Snider (Sayder, Satter) Mirts, born 1815 Juniata, PA died 1906 Callaway County MO, both buried at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. I think the cemetery is connected to a Methodist Church. Isaac and Lydia left PA sometime in the 1860s.”
I was able to identify that his father was Jacob and my best guess, after doing a lot of work on Isaac and his father Jacob, is that the name had been corrupted to Mirts, but the “original” Pennsylvania spelling was something along the lines of Moritz or Morets.
Here is what I learned about Isaac.
Starting with Census. We know it's him in 1870, Issac Mirtz age 58 in Fulton, Calloway, MO. Wife Lydia, and 6 or 7 children named.
Because the names and ages pretty well line up, we can find him for sure in 1860. Isaac Murtz age 45 in Spruce Hill, Juniata County with Lydia and 10 children.
And in the same way, the ages of he and Lydia and just the kids born before 1850, we can be sure it's them in 1850 in Greenwood, Perry, PA. His name is given as Isaac Moritz. But if you look at him in the 1850 Census, the listing has him, Lydia, the kids from oldest to youngest and then Jacob Morita age 70, Margaret Morita 68 and Hannah Morita 40. Morita is the way Ancestry transcribed their names. But it's the same name as Isaac. Jacob was Isaac's father.
And there is one more person of interest in this story. In 1870, Isaac was listed in Census with wife Lydia, then the kids who still lived at home, then Wm H Snyder age 25 (likely a nephew or much younger brother to Lydia) and then finally Israel K Mirtz age 26.
Because he was listed last, I don't think he was a son of Isaac and I would guess a nephew. He doesn't appear to be a son of John (if it's the right John) but could possibly be a son of David, the other brother of Isaac. But I can't find any hint of Israel or David prior to 1870.
Israel was later known as Ike K Morts and he died in 1891 in Calloway County.
Known Sons notes for Isaac Mirts (U2b1)
Isaac had two sons born before 1850: John and Jacob. I have only designated John since he was married and living on his own by 1880, Jacob was still living at home then so is not designated.
Parent-Proof notes for Lydia Estelle (Spouse 1)
The death certificate of Sarah Wharton (2 Apr 1847-5 May 1917) says she was d/o Isaac Mertz and Lydia Snyder.
