I have vague proof this man existed. He is mentioned in Biographical Memoirs of Henry County, Indiana as the father of John W Marts who became a prominent citizen of that place.
John W was born, it says, in Davises County, IN to James and his wife Emily Berry. It says also that James died when John W was about two years old.
In 1850, we find Nancy Berry, 59 living in Bloomington, Monroe Co, IN with Emily Marts 27, Ayrilla Marts 8 and John W Marts 2. This confirms both the marriage to Emily Berry and the premature death of James.
In 1880, John W says his father was born in Indiana. A family tree with more about the Berry family I found on a “kairoscomputers” web site says James was born in 1820 and died in 1849 and married Emily Berry in 1841 in Washington, Davises Co, IN.
James is designated U5d, I have no idea who his father was.
