Relocated notes for Joseph (Spouse 1)
A little research on German immigration shows that while there was a lot of immigration in the Colonial era, that “mass migration” from Germany to America began in the 1830’s.

I think that is when Joseph came, probably in the very early 1830’s, met and married Catherine in maybe 1833 or so, had Mary by about 1834, Elizabeth by 1837, William Henry by 1839.
Census History notes for Joseph (Spouse 1)
1840. Lives in District 6, Carroll Co, MD age 20-30, his wife 20-30, 1 son under 10, 2 daughters under 10.

1850. Lives in District 6, Carroll Co, MD age 40 says born in MD but could be sloppy work by Census taker. Wife Catherine age 36. Children: Mary 16, Elizabeth 14, Henry 12, Lucy 10, George 8, Mary 6, Catherine 4, Susan 2 and Eli new born.

1860. Lives in Manchester, Carroll Co, MD, age 51. Now says born Germany. Wife Catherine 31 (not!), Mary 21, Henry 20, Louisa 19, Mary 18, George 16, Catherine 15, Susan 14, Elias 11, Amelia 6.

1870. Joseph apparently has died. Catherine age 55 lives with George 25, Mary 35, Eli 19 and Catherine 6 in Manchester, MD.

Joseph signed his naturalization petition in Oct 1869 and was apparently deceased by the time of the 1870 Census so he should have been listed in the 1870 mortality Census, why is he not there, checked all spellings.
My Comments notes for Joseph (Spouse 1)
There is a petition for Naturalization dated 12 Oct 1869 wherein Joseph Rinehart asserts he was from Bavaria and enlisted 28 Aug 1862 in the 3rd Regiment of the Veterans Reserve Corps, Company 6 and was discharged 23 Feb 1865 by reason of physical disability.

The petition was filed and signed by him and granted 12 Oct 1869.

This same Joseph fled for a Civl War Pension 7 Apr 1865 as an invalid. There he listed his service as: C 3 V R C and H 74 PA Inf

The 74th Infantry was German units, each company from a different county. No county was specific for Company H but another unit was from Adams County — which abuts York and Carroll. This might explain why Joseph — if it was the same man — was in the PA Infantry.

A different Joseph Rinehart filed for a pension and said C & H 87 PA Inf. And his wife
Cathrine filed for a widow’s pension 10 Nov 1894. A search of rosters of soldiers shows there was a Joseph Rinehart who served in the 87th Regiment, Company H — he was a Private and a Musician.

Despite the coincidence of the wife’s name being Catherine, I believe this Joseph has nothing to do with this story— the date he filed cannot be true of the Joseph of interest.
