Four men named March were reported in the 1790 Census in Montgomery County, PA, no specific township: Danl, Danl Jr., Jacob and John.

In the 1800 Census, we find in Limerick Township, Montgomery County: Daniel Martz Jr. and Michael Martz, both age 26-44.

A person named Rconly told me there were two marriages at St Michaels and Zion Church in Kensington, Philadelphia: Anna Eliz Mertz and Philip Jacob Beuteman and her brother Daniel Mertz married Susanna Yost. She added that Daniel and Susanna moved to Limerick, Montgomery County.

Separately, I found a family tree — one with many source citations — showing the children of Johann Conrad and Anna Maria (Nicholas) Jost and their daughter Susannah married Daniel March. This document cited quite a few land records for Daniel Martz and his wife Susannah, most involving people named Yost or Nicholas (as a surname).

Twelve children are listed for Daniel and Susannah including sons: Daniel, Conrad, Jacob, Michael, Andreas, Frederich, George, John and Henry.

This Daniel seems to have been born maybe in the 1730’s or early 1740’s and seems to have lived to, let’s say, 1795. His children were born in the 1760’s and 1770’s but the family tree had no specific information on any of them including when or where they died.

There is a write-up in the History of Montgomery County edited by Theodore W Bean on Thomas J March (born 1844). He was the son of Michael who was the son of Frederick J March who was, in turn, the son of Frederick March who the book says was of German descent and was the earliest representative of the March family in Pennsylvania and who settled in Limerick Township.

This book also says that Frederick J moved to Chester County.

Lastly, there is the Journals of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, a Lutheran pastor who served the Montgomery County area. He has any number of citations for people named Mertz.

For example:

1763. Andreas Mertz, widower, from Gellenhausen and Anna Margaretha Ox, widow, of Philadelphia, applied for proclamation of the banns.

1778. Daniel Mertz and his wife Susannah reported the death of their son Andreas, 6 years old.

1778. Later Daniel Mertz and his sister, Widow Baiteman, came by with two horses. He was accompanying her as far as the English lines on her way home to Kensington.

So, should Daniel be considered someone whose name was Mertz or Martz? I don’t know. For now, I place him here as unidentified and am not making any further designation of his possible sons until more information becomes available. Daniel is designated U4a.
