Kathleen Fite’s tree says Jacob married Elizabeth Cowan Christ. Their marriage record said her name was Elizabeth Christ. Her son’s death certificate said her name was Elizabeth Cowan.

I believe her maiden name was Cowan and she married first Christ, some evidence being that in 1860, the daughter named Barbara A Martz n 1850 was named B A Christ.

Kathleen Fite’s Family Group Sheet shows 11 children for Jacob and Elizabeth Martz including son Jacob, no birth date given, who married Elizabeth Cowan Crist 3 Jan 1842.

There was indeed a Jacob Martz, age 32 [1818] whose wife was Elizabeth — Cowan or Crist — but I really have no absolute proof of who his father was. But it is clearly the Jacob that Fite is talking about, son of Jacob Sr.

A study of the tick marks in Census shows that Jacob had two sons under 10 in 1820 — who could be Jacob and Sebastian. (The Fite FGS also shows a Jonathan born 1815, maybe he died before 1820 as I know nothing more of what happened to him.)

The 1830 Census, though, is a bit of a problem. Jacob has two sons under 5 and two 5-9. The total count is not a problem, but where is Jacob who would have been 12? Was he misreported as only 5-9?

In any event, I am willing to believe that Jacob was indeed a son of Jacob and he is designated S1b2.

I believe the Jacob in the 1850 Census in Rockingham whose wife was Elizabeth was the son of Jacob Sr, based on the Fite FGS. Four children were present.

In 1860, he was J A Marts in Missouri and most of his children only identified by their initials but it is clear it is the same family.
