There is a Joseph Mertze (sic) buried at St Johns Cemetery in Lehighton where others of his family are buried. It is a tombstone marker of a Civil War soldier, no dates are given. I suspect it is this Joseph.

Joseph had just one son born before 1850, Jonathan, later called John. He lived with Joseph in 1850 and 1860 but I am unable to track him further.
