Parent-Proof notes for Angeline Keener
Her maiden name is given as Keener on find-a-grave. It is also what it says on the death certificate of their son Charles Keener Mertz.

The will of Angeline Mertz was written 19 Apr 1890 and proved 6 May 1890. She named her son Charles K Mertz and also her son John W Shapel and his wife Jemma A Shapel and grandson Charles E Shapel and granddaughter Annie Shapel. This of course makes it clear that Angeline had been married to Shapel prior to her marriage to Leonard Mertz.

This all confirmed by her obituary in the Miners Journal of 30 Apr 1890 that said she died 29 Apr at age 71. She was born at Orwigsburg and had been married twice, first to Mr Schappel and then Leonard Mertz who died at Philadelphia a few months ago.
Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for Leonard (Spouse 1)
I first came across Leonard when I started to try to identify all the Mertzes of Schuylkill County but I didn’t know he was. I still don’t. He may have had something to do with one of the several pioneer Mertzes of that place but I have nothing in particular to tie him to any one of them. So he is Unidentified and designated U5e.
Relocated and Census Tracking notes for Leonard (Spouse 1)
He was first named in 1850 in East Norwegian with Angeline and son William Shappel, age 8. He was involved in Port Carbon elections in 1852 so he had some prominence in town it seems to me.

In 1880, Leonard was reported with Angeline and son Charles in Port Carbon but also seems to have been listed in Philadelphia. The age is the same and the occupation of coal agent also the same. In both listings, it was said both his parents had been born in Pennsylvania.

The Philadelphia listing said he was the step-father of John Shapel in Philadelphia. John also lived with Leonard in 1860. Angeline had married first a Shapel.
Death and Find-a-Grave notes for Leonard (Spouse 1)
