Parent-Proof notes for Susanna Harris
A release was filed on 28 Aug 1858 (Northampton Misc Deed Book 11, page 500) by the heirs of Susanna Harris (late Susanna Hoffert) deceased widow of Peter Harris, also deceased, of Lower Saucon Township. The named heirs were David Harris, Susanna Mertz (late Susanna Harris) wife of Jacob Mertz and Joseph Harris.
Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for Jacob (Spouse 1)
I found this Jacob Mertz when I was looking for Susanna (Mertz) Raub buried at the same cemetery as Rev John Allen Mertz in Bucks County and her death certificate says her parents were Jacob and Susanna (Harris) Mertz, she was born 1832 in Saucon Township.

Jacob said in 1860-1880 that he was born in Pennsylvania and in 1880 that both his parents had been as well. The problem is: who were they?

The only other thing I really know about Jacob is where he lived, Lower Saucon Township. And one thing I have observed in all the work I have done on the Mærtz Hierarchical Project is that there was very little “mixing of the blood”. With very few exceptions, if several Mertzes lived in the same town or township, they were fairly closely related. Either brothers came to that place together or a man came with several of his sons and then everyone else there in later years are descendants of that original settler or those brothers.

And so, up until 1860, there were no Mertzes in Lower Saucon and then in 1860 we find both John Mertz and Jacob Mertz there. Lower Saucon is not far from Allen Township and so my conclusion (a guess really) is that Jacob was John’s brother and since I believe that John was the son of Heinrich, Jacob possibly was too. He is designated H4c.
