Parent-Proof notes for Harriet Savage
Three of John’s and Harriet’s children died after death certificates became mandatory. All say her maiden name was Savage. She was Harriet Savidge on son William’s death certificate, Harriet Elvidge (but it was Savage) on son Frank’s and Mary Savage on Albert’s.

I also found a newspaper notice of the 1849 marriage of John Martz to Harriet Savidge, both of Augusta Township.

I don’t know the relationship between Harriet Savage and Hannah who was living with Sarah Martz in 1850. Hannah, I think, was probably Hannah Miller who married Mr. Savage. Harriet could well have been his niece meaning their was no blood relationship between Harriet and her husband.
Death and Find-a-Grave notes for Harriet Savage
Gearhart says Harriet, wife of John Martz, is buried at Emanuel’s (or Lantz) Cemetery and shares the tombstone with her husband. He says the tombstone says age 72 years (no dates otherwise).

Meiser gives exact dates for her: 4 Dec 1832-9 Jul 1904. (That would be age 71.)

Find-a-grave has picked up those dates from Meiser. I had no luck finding her tombstone either.

But I found a death notice in the Sunbury American dated Friday 4 Jul 1902. It says she died Wednesday (i.e. 2 Jul 1902) and was 72y, 7m, 5d (29 Nov 1829).

The notice also said she was survived by: William, John and Frank and Mrs. Nelson Zortman (local) and Mrs. Nelson Comp of Hartford, CT.
Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for John (Spouse 1)
Sarah Martz of Augusta Township, widow of John, I believe, died in 1863 and in her will named son John. He must be the John living two doors away from Sarah in the 1860 Census.

Additional evidence is that after John died, Sarah lived with Elizabeth Miller, her mother I would guess and Hannah Savage, her sister I would guess. John married Harriet Savage. If Harriet was, say, Hannah’s brother’s daughter or something like that, there was no blood relationship between John and Harriet.

John is designated P6c1.
Discrepancies notes for John (Spouse 1)
Joseph A Meiser in Martz/Mertz Pioneers of Northumberland County shows a John Martz born about 1824, son of Jacob Martz and Magdalena Malick, whose wife was Harriet and whose children were: Albert born 1849, Frank C (1861-1911), Mary J, Elizabeth, Harriet and Florence E.

He is talking about this John. I have no idea whether Jacob and Magdalena even had a son John; I do know that after Magdalena died, her living heirs sold her property and there was no John mentioned. So this John was not their son and in any event who was the John mentioned in Sarah’s 1863 will? I think this John was Sarah’s son John because he lived two doors away from her in 1860 and married Harriet Savage and Sarah’s sister, I believe, married into the Savage family.
Death and Find-a-Grave notes for John (Spouse 1)
Two Northumberland County genealogists include John Martz in their respective listings for Lantzs Emanuel Cemetery near Sunbury, PA.

Heber Gearhart says his tombstone says age 68 years (no other dates). Gearhart shows no middle initial for John.

Joseph A Meiser, who came later, lists him as John H Martz 1824-1892. Those dates have been picked up by find-a-grave, as well the middle initial.

I have walked both the upper and lower parts of that cemetery and saw no sign of John.

I believe it is true that John is buried there but the dates, it seems certain, are suspect. There was a newspaper article published in the Northumberland County Democrat on Friday 10 May 1889 that describes the tragic death of John Martz of Upper Augusta Township in gruesome detail; he was hit by a train. It doesn’t specifically say when this accident occurred but it does say he will be buried Tuesday at Lantz’s church. A Public Press article covered the same accident, the paper was dated Fri 10 May and said the accident happened Saturday night — so 4 May.

The only other biographical details it gives are: “he was 67 years, 1 month and 16 days old and left a wife and four children.”

The obvious question is whether John who was hit by the train was Sarah’s son John? I think it was because:

he lived in Augusta Township
he was buried at Lantz
his age in Census, specifically 38 in 1860 and 48 in 1870
he was survived by his widow
the dates aren’t all that different from what Meiser said (with no apparent source)
I think he was survived by five children but four of them lived locally and one in Connecticut.
