There is general agreement in the various sources that cover the Rockingham Martz family as to the names of John’s sons. There is not as much agreement as to their order of birth, but I believe the Masanutten book is totally consistent with everything else I have learned from tombstones and Census.

I believe John J was John’s fourth oldest son. He is designated S1d.

From the 1850 Census, John had six sons.

I can find no real trace of his second son Samuel. There is a Samuel A Martz who was in California by 1880 of about the right age, born in Virginia but he said his parents were both born Pennsylvania so it gave me doubt.

I can also find no further record of fourth son James who at age 16 wasn’t even living with his parents in 1860, a clue he may have died young.

And I can find no further record of George who was 1 in 1850 and not present in John’s household in 21860, a clue he too may have died young.

John J married Mary D (Polly) Looker 12 Aug 1831 in Rockingham County according to the Thomas Looker book. She was the daughter of John Looker Jr.
