Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for Charles Mertz (G1a3a)
I don’t know for sure who Charles’ father was. He said consistently in 1850-1870 that he was born in Pennsylvania. I wish I could find I’m in the 1880 Census when he would have said where his father was born, but I am unable to find him. Nonetheless, he was listed in Census in Washington Township, Westmoreland County in 1850 and 1870 and Salem Township, Westmoreland County in 1860. Salem is “home” township of William Mertz (1786-1865) and so my first guess would have been that Charles was his son but I know the names of all of William’s sons and there was no Charles.

But Carl later Charles Martz, William’s brother I think, also started out in Salem Township when he first moved to Westmoreland County and then in 1850 was also in Washington Township and so my educated guess is that the younger Charles was a son of the older.

Charles is designated G1a3a.
