Parent-Proof notes for 7G GF Edward Talbott
His birth was recorded in the birth register of the West River Monthly Meeting (monthly meetings are associated with the Quaker faith).
My Comments notes for 7G GF Edward Talbott
Edward was an important and faithful member of the Society of Friends (Quakers) in West River. He came by his faith naturally as his father and mother both were Quaker and his mother’s second husband a very prominent member of the local Society.
Edward inherited both the land his father bequeathed him directly, Talbott’s Ridge, but also Poplar Knowle intended for his brother who died before reaching majority. He sold all his inherited properties except Poplar Knowle but also made several impressive property acquisitions. For example, he obtained a warrant for 2900 acres which resulted in several patents issued to him: Talbott’s Vineyard 1021 acres, Talbott’s Resolution Manor 1087 acres and Talbotts Plains 628 acres. All of these were on or near Elk Ridge and on or near the Patapsco River. This marks the movement of the Talbott family closer to Baltimore.
Children Names notes for 7G GF Edward Talbott
Edward wrote his will 11 Sep 1689. He divided Poplar Knowle between his two sons Edward and John upon their majority. He also gave Talbott’s Vineyard to his son Edward and he divided Talbott’s Resolutions Manor between son John and daughter Elizabeth. Among the things he left his wife was his 1/16 share of a new ship being built, Ralph Cooper commander.
My father has Quaker ancestors, the Hopewell family. I have always been struck by the unique character of Quaker wills. The Quakers left very extensive wills and mentioned not only their wife and children but often cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws and at times, it seems, most everyone they ever knew.
Edward’s will was a very typical Quaker will. Besides his wife and children, he mentioned and bequeathed cash or livestock or property to: William Hedges, Philip Coale, Samuel Coale, John Talbott (I think someone other than his son of that name), William Richardson, David Richardson, Joseph Richardson, Sophia Richardson, William Coale, Elizabeth Smyth wife of Nathan and Elizabeth Galloway daughter of Richard.
The Richardsons for the most part were his step-sisters and brothers, children of his mother by her second husband. Elizabeth Galloway was his niece, daughter of his sister by her third husband. Edward’s wife was the widow of William Coale so the Coales mentioned were no doubt his step-children, her children by her first husband.
Parent-Proof notes for Elizabeth (Spouse 1)
The Richard Talbott book is based on the Thomas Book which says she was the daughter of Philip Thomas and his wife Sarah Harrison and that she had first married William Coale.
My Comments notes for Elizabeth (Spouse 1)
The Thomas Book also says about Elizabeth Thomas that though William Coale was her first husband, she was his third wife. William died 30 Oct 1678 and then she married second by 1683 Edward Talbott as, I think, his first wife and then he died in January 1693.
In fact, I think Elizabeth married Edward by 1682 and it seems he died in 1689.
