Relocated notes for 6G GF Richard Colegate
IMMIGRANT. On 18 May 1698, Richard Colegate presented to the Baltimore Court a letter granting him power of attorney for Michael Yoakley and John Pettet (London merchants) as their agent in America to collect monies due on their behalf.
My Comments notes for 6G GF Richard Colegate
A biography I found on-line, but which seems to check out, says:
In 1702, he was one of the Commissioners for Baltimore County and he was a delegate to the Assembly from Baltimore County at various sessions 1707-1721.
He held the military ranks of captain, colonel and major. He had seven children with Rebecca, his first wife: Prudence, Patience, Richard, Temperance, John, Thomas and Benjamin.
He possessed over 5,000 acres of land at his death. Among his land holdings were Friends Discovery and Colegate’s Last Shift, the latter patented in 1717. Also, "Cole's Harbour," upon a portion of which the City of Baltimore was located.
He died at Garretson, his home plantation, on Powell's Point, and was buried in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Baltimore.
This is largely in agreement -- doesn’t mean either is right -- with his biography as given on find-a-grave. I have not checked out all the “facts” as stated on find-a-grave. I have no discordant notes to suggest they are in error, I just wonder about it based on seeing too many other similar things with huge errors. For example, I suspect there was indeed a Richard Talbott born in Kent England on the day stated to the parents stated, but how was it proven that it was the same Richard Talbott who appeared in America about 1700?
I also find it curious that, in the other biography I found, that he died at Garretson, his home plantation. Richard’s oldest son, Richard, married a Garretson, from Delaware supposedly. Is that not a strange coincidence? Might it be that the original land later came to be called Garretson, sometime after Richard Sr. died?
Children Names notes for 6G GF Richard Colegate
The Baltimore County will of Richard Colegate, merchant, of Patapsco River, dated 8 Aug 1721 proved 16 Feb 1722. It involved a great deal of land, divided among his children who, for the most part, were not yet of age. The children mentioned were sons Richard, John, Thomas and Benjamin and daughters Prudence, Patience and Temperance.
Parent-Proof notes for Rebecca (Spouse 1)
A very interesting deed dated 5 Aug 1707 recorded that Captain John Dorsey conveyed two tracts on the north side of the Patapsco River to Richard Colegate as a gift because he had taken in marriage Rebecca Herbert daughter of Elinor Herbert. No relationship was stated of John Dorsey to Elinor but there must have been one -- either his sister or daughter I would think.
Certain Internet write-ups refer to the mother as Lady Herbert and/or Lady Herbert of Ireland. I’m not sure I buy that. The implication would be, I think, that Lady Herbert did not come to America so how then did Rebecca, unmarried presumably at the time, find her way here?
