Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for David S Mertz (H6a2)
His baptism 2 Mar 1806 was recorded at Jordan Church in Whitehall Township. He was born 23 Jan 1806, son of Heinrich and Hanna Mertz. He is designated H6a2.
Relocated and Census Tracking notes for David S Mertz (H6a2)
In 1830, two males age 20-29 lived in the David Martz household, none of that age were with Heinrich, David’s father. I think the other adult male was David’s brother Carl.
In 1850, he was a farmer. In 1860, no occupation was given. In 1870, he was missing from Census. In 1880, he was a retired clergyman.
I don’t know if he ever lived away from Lehigh County, but in 1860 he sold a small tract in Franklin Township, Carbon County he had owned for about a year. Later his son Henry W lived there.
Death and Find-a-Grave notes for David S Mertz (H6a2)
He and Caroline are on find-a-grave.
Known Daughters notes for David S Mertz (H6a2)
The book, Descendants of Balthasar Scholl, cites Caroline’s will as naming five daughters: Amanda, Sarah, Matilda (pre-deceased her mother), Clarissa and Hannah. I have found and linked all these daughters to their parents on find-a-grave.
A daughter Pheon born 28 Mar 1836 to David and Magdalena Mertz was baptized at Jordan Lutheran, I leave this note here but I don’t think it was this couple.
Known Sons notes for David S Mertz (H6a2)
From the 1850 Census, David had three sons:
H6a2a Henry W 1829
H6a2b David 1839
and the third son was Franklin but I am unable to track him further.
From a book, Descendants of Balthasar Scholl, there were two additional sons, John and Daniel, both of whom died as infants.
Parent-Proof notes for Caroline (Spouse 1)
Her maiden name is given on the death certificates of her son David S and daughter Amanda A.
Children Names notes for Caroline (Spouse 1)
Caroline Mertz wrote a very detailed will dated 19 Apr 1887. Her husband was still alive when she wrote the will and yet it seems clear that everything they owned must have been in her name, including she states how to dispose of his clothing when he dies. One of the items in her will said: “the amount coming to me after the decease of my husband out of the funds of the Christiana Aid Society of the Evangelical Association shall be used by my Executors to pay the indebtedness upon any real estate and whatever balance be left I give and bequest unto my children”.
She provides for an income for her husband if he survives her (he didn’t) and names all her children:
Sons: Henry W, David S and Franklin
Daughters: Amanda and Sarah
Other Daughters: “the children of my daughter Matilda, the children of my daughter Clarissa, the children of my daughter Hannah, deceased. All three were deceased.
