Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for Nicholas Mertz (N4)
We know that Nicholas -- the one who immigrated as a teenager -- had a son Nicholas. Orphans Court filings upon his death make that clear.

The question for me always was whether the Nicholas named as an Executor by Peter who died in 1787 was his nephew Nicholas or his own son and I wasn’t sure for a long time. But M L Kueker found definitive proof in the form of deeds filed in conjunction with Peter’s estate that clearly state that Nicholas was his son.

Once we knew there were two cousins named Nicholas, we were able to determine from birth dates that the Nicholas who settled in Middleburg before 1790 was Peter’s son. And so the question then is, what ever happened to Nicholas son of Nicholas? I do not know.

He is designated N4.

I do not know when he was born but his father died in 1760 and the various petitions always listed Nicholas last among his children and said he was a minor. In fact, when his sister died in 1776, he was a still a minor. A minor was someone under 16 so that gives a very narrow window in which Nicholas was born — it had to be just before or even just after his father died.
