1870. John F Rosenthal farmer age 41 born in Prussia lives in Boynton Twp, Tazewell Co, IL with wife Susan A 28 and William 4, Ida G 2 and Gustaf 2 months.

I know from the 1870 Census that John F was the father of J F W Rosenthall. John F was born about 1829 according to that Census. Then in 1880, JFW lives with his mother who has remarried. So when I found a photo of a tombstone in the same cemetery where JFW is buried of a person identified only by his last name and dod 1 Nov 1873, I suspected it might be John F. I then calculated that John F was about 44 when he died, if he died in 1873 -- and then I convinced myself that I can indeed see age 44 inscribed on the tombstone.

1880. Susan A age 39 born IL her parents both NC is the wife of Henry Fehrmann 42 farmer. The names of the children present are instructive, though confusing. J Henry age 4 and B Ira 3 months are the couple’s children. Then there is William S Green 13 and Ida G Green 12. These are the same two children found listed as Rosenthall children in 1870. And finally we have Gustave W Rosenthall age 10 and John W F Rosenthall age 8. All four of the latter children are said to be step-children of Henry.

Why the two older children are said to be surname Green I don’t know. Either Susan A was married before she married John F Rosenthall and they were incorrectly listed in 1870 or they are incorrectly listed here.
