Parent-Proof notes for Jacob Ulp
Jacob was named as an Executor of his father’s will, along with his brother-in-law Jacob Norcross. The question is: then what happened to Jacob? Since I knew nothing more about him, for a time I considered that he may have been the Unnamed Ulp who left a widow Mary Vass who later married Michael Wildrick and brought four children named Ulp into his New Jersey household.
But now, following clues gathered from people who share DNA with me, I am convinced Jacob moved to Trumbull County, OH and died there. So this profile is now about that Jacob Ulp who I believe was Barnet’s son and Conrad’s brother.
A biography of the family appears in the History of Trumbull and Mahoning Counties: “Jacob Ulp came from New Jersey to Brookfield in 1804 and settled on the farm where his sons now live. He married Elizabeth Scheirer and raised three sons and two daughters. All are living except one daughter, viz: William and Amos, Brookfield ; Enoch, Hickory township, Mercer county, Pennsylvania; Eliza (Clark) Girard, Pennsylvania, Susan is dead. Jacob Ulp died in 1860 aged eighty-three; Mrs. Ulp died in 1836 aged about sixty-two. William Ulp was born in Brookfield on the farm where he now lives in 1810. He married, first, Elizabeth Carkuff, a native of New Jersey. She bore four children, all now living: Timothy Dwight, Enoch, William, and Adelaide. Mrs. Ulp died in 1845 aged thirty-two. Mr. Ulp married for his second wife Nancy Wright, a native of Massachusetts. Five children, Eliza, Jane, Leonidas, Ella, and Ida. Amos Ulp was born in Brookfield in 1813, and is still a resident of the township. He married Rachel Conover and has three children—Robert, Charles, and Alfred.”
I believe I know more about Susan than is given here.
Census History notes for Jacob Ulp
He may have been the Jacob Ulp age 26-44 living alone in Meadville, Crawford County, PA in 1800 but for sure was the Jacob Ulp found after that in Trumbull County, OH.
In 1850, he said he was born in New Jersey, in 1880, his son William R said both his parents had been born in New Jersey. The 1860 Mortality Census appears to say he was born in NY — well it looks more like a Y than a J. Despite that, and because in other places it says he was from New Jersey, I believe that’s where he was born.
DNA Evidence notes for Jacob Ulp
In 2019, I learned that I share DNA with “roscoesmusic34” and he descends from Jacob Ulp through Jacob’s son William R Ulp. From his tree, which only shows paternal ancestors, our only obvious connection is Ulp.
I am also a DNA cousin to someone who descends from Susan Ulp who married Robert McCormick. That led to the marriage record of Susan Ulp and Robert McCormick. They married 3 Sep 1829 in Trumbull County, OH. I think she just has to be Jacob’s daughter, Susan, mentioned in the county biography of him. It was published i n1882 and all it said about Susan as she had died. I think she died much earlier as I can never find her in her husband’s household, though I can’t find him in 1850.
