Parent-Proof notes for 5G GF Thomas Marshall
A 1742 lease to Thomas Marshall then 34 was for the joint lives of his wife Sarah then 22 and son John age 1. It seems to me a reasonable guess that Thomas and Sarah then had a son they named Thomas shortly after. So my theory is that perhaps the father of our ancestor Thomas was also named Thomas. But I’m just guessing.

One of Thomas Brerwoods leases in 1742 was to Thomas Marshall then 34 his wife Sarah then 22 and son John being 1.
(From book of admins by Anne W B Belle, LDS film.) Thomas Marshall 1778 will LOA to Sophia Marshall. I have this will too, he mentions that he has children but does not name them. Will dated 10 May 1777.
Then Mary Sophia Marshall sold land bought by Thomas (Lot 106) in 1778 as his widow. WG C 137.
My Comments notes for 5G GF Thomas Marshall
Thomas Marshall was a popular name in the late 1700’s in Baltimore County. One of them married Sarah Bull 3 Oct 1740 (St. John/St. George) and had son John 28 Feb 1741. This may have been the Thomas who died intestate in 1775 and whose estate entered administration with Sarah (no doubt his wife) and Jacob appointed Administrators. It is easy for me to believe -- but I can’t yet prove -- that this was the same Thomas who secured that 1742 lease and that they also had a son they named Thomas sometime in the 1740’s.
And I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t also eventually prove out that Jacob Marshall, administrator, was none other than the Jacob Marshall who, with Edmund Stansbury and William Davis, was involved in that large land transaction of 1789.
There was also a Thomas Marshall who died in 1778 and whose wife Sophia was named as Executrix. His will referred to children but did not name them. But at St Paul’s Episcopal Church in Baltimore I found two births to parents Thomas Marshall and Mary Sophia: George William in 1769 and Mary Sophia in 1771. I suspect this was a different and unrelated Thomas Marshall but gives me caution that the name was not uncommon and any research into anyone of this name has to be done very carefully so as not to confuse the various men of that name.
Children Names notes for 5G GF Thomas Marshall
A query posted in the Maryland Genealogical Society Bulletin in 2003: “Looking for wife and parents of Thomas Marshall born 1740-1750 (Census) died 1831 in Pipe Creek leaving an Administration account and no will. His children were: Isaac, Sarah (wife of Aaron Campbell), Jacob (husband of Rebecca Murray), Diane (wife of Gerard Matthews), Elizabeth (wife of Henry Kidd), and Edmund or Edward (husband of Rebecca Ritchie). Jacob and Edmund migrated to Preble County, OH.”
The six children named in this query is not exactly complete, though it seems it wasn’t easy for anyone to name them all. In the Maryland Land Records, there is a 15 page story that begins with four heirs of Thomas Marshall petitioning the court on behalf of his ten heirs to divide a 250 acre parcel of land Thomas owned on the Old York Road near the PA line. The ten heirs were: Nancy wife of Simon Markey, Diana wife of Jarrard Matthews, Isaac, Elizabeth deceased wife of Jacob Keller, Rachel wife of Levy Lamott, Sarah wife of Aaron Campbell, Rebecca deceased wife of Jacob Singer, Hannah wife of Christopher Walter, Edward and Thomas. A later petition said that they had forgotten to list Jacob who had moved to Ohio and that Elizabeth was not deceased after all, but now married to Henry Kidd. The court did issue a decision but the heirs still fought over the settlement for several more years in quite a lengthy dispute.
