My Comments notes for Elizabeth
She married David Bowen after the early death of Samuel Marts and then John Underwood after David. She is buried in the Marts family plot as Elizabeth wife of John Underwood.
Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for David (Spouse 1)
For a long time, I thought that David Mertz, who married Barbara Miller, and died in Northumberland County in 1822 was the son of John Jacob. But once I learned that he was born in 1745, John Jacob was ruled out as his father. I now know that David who was born in 1745 was the son of Peter.

Nonetheless, I think it is possible that John Jacob did have a son David as a certain David appeared in the 1810 Census in NY State where John Jacob had moved. NY State David was age 45+ in 1810, so I have estimated his birth year as about 1765.

In about 2007, I was contacted by yet another group of researchers interested in the Sparta, Livingston -- upstate NY -- branch of the family. The person taking the most thorough approach was Mary Lou Kueker. She and the others descend from Samuel Mertz, son of David Mertz.

I spent well over a year working with Mary Lou and she has been by far the most helpful Mertz researcher I have ever been in contact with. She very carefully studied my theories stating that it was the Longswamp Mertzes who became the Northumberland County Mertzes and that John Jacob then moved on to NY State. Based on her own very exhaustive research, she has concluded that I am right. She has also added many things to my base of knowledge including that Nicholas of Middleburg was the son of Peter and she has found several key documents that have been very helpful to me.

She now believes, as I do, that David of NY State was indeed the son of John Jacob, son of Nicholas. He is designated N1b.
Relocated and Census Tracking notes for David (Spouse 1)
1810. I have three David's to sort out in the 1810 Census and I think this is the obvious candidate to have removed to New York State where his father and brother (Conrad) had gone previously. David Marts lived near Conrod Marts in Caledonia Township, Genesee County, NY. He was 45+.
Death and Find-a-Grave notes for David (Spouse 1)
The will of David Martz of Caledonia Township proved 21 Nov 1817. It mentioned wife Elizabeth and only son Samuel, a minor, but a deed recorded in 1818 named the other children as Polly, Sally, Magdalen, Betsey, and Daniel.

David is not on find-a-grave.
