Parent-Proof notes for Catherine
Jonathan’s wife was named Catherine, according to Richard J Martz. He also speculates that since their presumed son Simon named a son Vandine, perhaps that was Catherine‘s maiden name. There is evidence of a Vandine (Van Dyne, actually) family in the right place at the right time.
Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for Jonathan (Spouse 1)
Jonathan was born 19 Sep 1776 and baptized 20 Oct 1776 at Longswamp Reformed by his parents Peter and Susanna Mertz with Conrad Drescher and Elisabetha as sponsors. I believe Elisabetha was Peter’s sister.

Jonathan was given a unique name in the early Mertz families. Because of that, he is easy to spot in later records. I believe that Jonathan was Peter’s oldest son so is designated P1a.
Relocated and Census Tracking notes for Jonathan (Spouse 1)
Jonathan came as a teenager from Berks County to Northumberland County with his father and the rest of the family. They settled in Chillisquaque Township and later Jonathan bounced around between Sunbury and Northumberland and the surrounding townships.

1800. Jonathan Marts was 16-25, lived in Chillisquaque with his (presumed) wife of the same age, no children.

1804. Richard J Martz found mention of Jonathan Mertz of Catawissa Township in 1804. In and of itself, this just is one more example of how he “bounced” around. But what is curious to me is that the first Martz I ever knew of in Catawissa Township was Jacob Martz (P6b), who got there sometime after 1810. Jacob was, I believe, Jonathan’s first cousin. So Jonathan’s presence in Catawissa earlier perhaps supports my contention that Jacob was of the Augusta Township Martzes, though it may argue for the possibility that maybe he was of the P1 family rather than P6.

1810. Jonathan Martz, age 26-45, a stiller, lived in Augusta Township, Northumberland County, apparently having removed there sometime after 1800 leaving his father and brother who remained in Chillisquaque and coming to Augusta where several of his cousins lived.

1820. He was still in Augusta Township.

1830. Jonathan Mrtz, age 50-59, lived in Point Township.

1832. Jonathan was listed as a lock tender on the 1832 tax list. This strengthens the idea that his brother Peter was indeed the Peter who was a Supervisor of Canals.
Death and Find-a-Grave notes for Jonathan (Spouse 1)
Jonathan was not listed in the 1840 Census. The last tax record mention of him was 1834.

Richard J Martz, who descends in all likelihood from Jonathan, has tried hard to determine when exactly he may have died. He notes that he was taxed in Northumberland Borough in 1832 and also in 1834 when he was a tenant of John Porter. After that, Richard cites occasional mentions of Jonathan in Northumberland County court records. He was a frequent party to various suits where either he sought to collect money owed him or others tried to collect money he owed them (more of the latter type it seems).

At least one of those suits carried on into the early 1840’s, though there is no evidence that the court understood that Jonathan most likely was already deceased at the time. So it is unclear when exactly Jonathan died, though middle-to-late 1830’s about brackets it.

As of summer, 2015, he was not on find-a-grave. No one knows where he was buried.
