Parent-Proof notes for Peter P Potee
Peter P Potee. Once believed to be the son of Peter and Betsy Ann Shanks but now we think son of Francis.
Peter P Potee's obituary was in the Baltimore Sun newspaper on 14 May 1881. It states he was never married and leaves a sister about 6 years his junior. [I’m sure this is a reference to Julia.] Peter was a constable, bailiff and had a private detective agency for a time in Baltimore City. Earlier in his work-life he painted coaches. In the last 13 to 15 years of his life he suffered with consumption and was pretty much confined to his home. He was 71 years old [born in 1810].
Julia H Potee. She is listed with Peter P in the 1850 Census. Just based on that listing, it might seem she was his wife but I think there is no doubt she was his sister. Her age too is not known exactly but I think 1821 is as good a guess as any and a lot of things fit with that date. I don’t think it was much later.
If you google Julia H Potee, there is an interesting record in an index that in 1838 she sold something (either real estate, household goods or livestock). I believe she was about 16 and not married, this was the single Julia H Potee -- who never married. Julia and Peter P were both buried in the Friends Cemetery in Baltimore, curiously. And Peter’s obituary refers to only his surviving sister Julia. But I think they always lived together and were so close that the obituary simply didn’t acknowledge other sisters, brothers or half-siblings who might also have been still alive.
Laura P Potee born about 1835. I believe she was also the sister of Peter P and Julia H as all three lived together in 1850. The father had died, the other family members were married and raising their own family, the oldest brother (or possibly oldest surviving brother) had taken in the two unmarried (Laura probably does eventually marry) sisters.
