Parent-Proof notes for Johannes Schneider
Johannes was the son of Ulrich Schneider. Ulrich was the brother of Veronica (Schneider) Mertz. So, Johannes was the nephew of Veronica (Schneider) Mertz and his wife Anna Margaretha Votrin was the niece of John David Mertz, Veronica’s husband.
Research notes for Johannes Schneider
According to the records of Egpyt Reformed Church, and I have seen it elsewhere too, John Snyder and his wife and daughter Susanna and two other children were killed by Indians 8 Oct 1793. Two other daughters were scalped but recovered.

Penn Germania, available on google books, has yet another version of this story.
My Comments notes for Johannes Schneider
Johannes and Anna Magaretha lived in North Whitehall Township, Lehigh Co, PA and they and three of their children were murdered by Indians on 8 Oct 1763. I have seen some accounts of this story elsewhere but Nita Caffrey gives the best account I have seen.

She cites a letter dated 1763. “They went to Hans Schneider’s and the Marks plantations and found both houses on fire...and found Schneider, his wife and three children dead in the field...and on going further they found two others wounded, one of whom was scalped.”

And she cites an Orphan’s Court petition dated 1765. “Petition from Nicholas Marks brother-in-law to Magdalena and Dorothy Schneider daughters of John Schneider deceased both being minors. On 8 Oct 1763, the said John Schneider his wife and three children were most cruelly murdered by the Indians at their dwelling house in Whitehall Twp. The two girls named were wounded, one scalped and left for dead. Magdalena has recovered but the other, Dorothy, is still in a languishing condition. The petitioner requests financial assistance.”

This is a pretty descriptive account. Many people seem to believe that Nicholas Marks was none other than Nicholas Mertz. But I can’t figure out which one they think it was. Nicholas the elder died about 1760, his son Nicholas was still a minor as late as 1776 and Peter’s son Nicholas, from his tombstone, was born in 1748 so he too was also a minor when the Indian incident occurred.
