Census History notes for Susan C Hoffman
1880. She is Susan C Gross living in Shamokin Dam with son Edgar F. She is 49, he 19.
My Comments notes for Susan C Hoffman
I once thought she maybe was a Hummel and the best I could do was make her the daughter of Benjamin Hummel (of the George Adam line) and his wife Elizabeth Zartman. But I was wrong.

I do know that a Jacob Frederick who seems close with the Hummels married a woman named Susan, who, after he did married Gross. They have quite a number of children almost all of whom die young and who are buried at Hummel's Cemetery as are Jacob and Susan, the parents.

One son survives to adulthood, Edgar and in 1880 he is living with Susan Gross. Her tombstone says Susan Frederick Gross. So the question is what tie do these folks have with the Hummel Family? So I first guessed that Susan may have been born a Hummel.

But her death certificate says she was the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Seasholtz) Hoffman.

The Fredericks' relationship to Benjamin and Catherine Hummel seems to pre-date his marriage to Susan -- so the idea she was Hummel was weak from the get-go.. However, in her biography of the John Jacob Hummel Family, Dorothy Schuck Amerman shows a James Hummel and a Susan Hummel b.ca 1830 as children of Benjamin Hummel and Catherine Hilbish, his wife.

But they were not. James, it appears, was the son of a different Benjamin Hummel of Middlecreek Twp -- no known relationship to Benjamin Hummel of Penns and Monroe Twp. So I posited that James had a sister named Susan and married her off to Jacob Frederick.

But again, her death certificate totally debunks that whole theory. So there is still the problem that iif Susan did belong to the Hummel family, there would be no reason for her or her family to be buried at the Hummel family cemetery in Hummels Wharf.

But I know so much about this couple and I need to keep track of Jacob Frederick to continue to see if I can determine his relationship to a different Jacob Frederick who married a Mertz and also had a relationship with the Mertz and Hilbish families, so they are in my database.
Census History notes for Jacob (Spouse 1)
1850. Jacob Frederick age 19 is reported in the household of John Hummel and wife Hannah as a laborer in Penns Twp (page 27). Jacob Frederick age 19 is also reported as a laborer in the household of Daniel Frederick age 38. Living here is also Charlotte Frederick age 60.
My Comments notes for Jacob (Spouse 1)
In 1850, I think Jacob is reported twice. He is a neighbor of Benjamin and Catherine Hummel and several of their adult children. And he is also reported living with John Hummel, another son of Benjamin and Catherine. There may be yet another Jacob Frederick in existence but I think it is the same man reported twice.
