John and Matilda Mertz have a son indexed as Harry M age 8 in the 1880 Census. I have looked at the record and it is very hard to read and it possibly says Harry F, at least I can convince myself it might.

So it seems a reasonable assumption that the Harry F Mertz who lives his adult life in Milton -- born Nov 1870 -- is John's son. If Harry F and Harry M are, in fact, two different people, I still would bet a lot of money they are both grandsons of Israel.
