Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for Daniel Martz (P6a1c)
Meiser’s Martz/Mertz lists Daniel as a son of William and Elizabeth, and says he married Sarah Shipe and gives birth and death dates for both of them. Tallman and J L Floyd agree.
I was always a little skeptical of that if only because William himself is such a mystery that the whole family is hard to figure out.
One thing that troubled me is there is no record of Daniel ever living anywhere but Lower Augusta Township. That’s where he was reported in Census starting in 1850, it’s where he attended church (St Elias) and where he is buried. It is where his wife was living when he met and married her.
So I did try to see if I could find a better candidate to be Daniel’s parents, with no real luck. But then Terri Seiler found me in 2013 and we compared notes. She had some great information about her line back to Daniel. I was hoping that together we could figure some more things out about Daniel and, if we could prove his father was William, maybe make some progress on William too. Working together, we compiled a solid logical case that Daniel was the son of William and then that became proven fact.
Terri went to the court house in Sunbury and found what I had missed on the LDS film with death “certificates” from the 1890’s. Daniel was born in Snydertown. So was John -- the one who died in 1898. John’s death certificate said his parents were William and Elizabeth. She also found record that both John and Daniel served in the same Civil War Regiment. Everything suggests that Daniel and John were brothers.
Even before we brought John into the picture, we were reasonably convinced that William was his father based on Daniel’s Snydertown birth in 1823. In the 1830 Census, the only Martzes in Shamokin Township (which is where Snydertown is) were William and the widow Elizabeth whose husband died in 1815. So, William was the best and obvious candidate to be his father.
Another argument is that Daniel named his first son William Jacob -- Jacob being the name of his wife's father. So most likely William being the name of his own father. And he named his first daughter Mary Elizabeth -- Mary being his wife’s mother's name and Elizabeth his mother.
Finally, there is that 1862 estate file where Daniel was named Administrator of William’s estate. You would think maybe John, the older son, who stayed in Snydertown might have been named. The inventory interestingly was filed between the time John enlisted and then Daniel, could that have something to do with it?
Daniel is designated P6a1c.
Relocated and Census Tracking notes for Daniel Martz (P6a1c)
In 1850 and 1860, and I assume in the following decades too, Daniel lived in Lower Augusta Township. So it is interesting to consider the geography involved. The whole family started out in Augusta Township after they moved from Berks County, then first John and then later William (his cousin) moved to Snydertown and/or Shamokin Township (not that far, really but it was another township).
There was a Reformed Church in Snydertown, founded I think in 1821. It is where Elizabeth (Evert) Martz, William's wife, is buried. Yet young Daniel started going to the Blue Church down southeast of Paxinos by 1847 perhaps earlier. Had he met Sarah Shipe already and started going there to see her or did he start going to that church for some unexplained reason and that is where they met?
I think it may have something to do with the fact that David Martz, his uncle I think, also came to be involved with the Blue Church, in his case as early as 1832. Maybe it is how Daniel got introduced to that church. Maybe it strengthens the argument that Daniel’s father was David’s brother.
Death and Find-a-Grave notes for Daniel Martz (P6a1c)
His death record is present on LDS film # 961101 giving his date of death and age 69y 11m 13d [3 Sep 1823]. It says he was born in Snydertown.
Floyd (on pages 468-493) mentions Sophia Kuebler who married Daniel Mertz. I couldn’t tell exactly what time period, it may have been a younger Daniel.
His will proved 24 Aug 1893 with Daniel M as executor.
Daniel is on find-a-grave.
Find-a-Grave notes for Daniel Martz (P6a1c)
Parent-Proof notes for Sarah (Spouse 1)
Terri Seiler found the baptism of Sarah to Jacob Shipe and Maria with date of birth matching Sarah Martz from her tombstone.
After Daniel’s father William died in 1861 and Daniel was appointed Administrator of his PA estate, on 20 Oct 1862, Daniel appointed Jacob Shipe to fulfill his duties. Daniel was no doubt off at war.
