Parent-Proof notes for Barbara Huber
The family tree of Beverly Hufford, a descendant of John Hartman Kleckner, erroneously says that his father George was the son of Solomon Kleckner and gave the parentage of Solomon’s wife Barbara. Beverly lived in Bloomsburg and a short drive over to the Union County Court House could have given her the information to correct her error, so I take her “facts” about Barbara Huber’s parents with a degree of skepticism.
Children Names notes for Barbara Huber
Solomon’s children were listed in CBR thus:
“In the family of Solomon Kleckner were the following children: John, who removed to Illinois; Jacob, who died in Limestone Township; Peter, who is still living in Stephenson County, IL., at the age of ninety-five; Joseph, who died in Rapidan, VA., and was buried in New Berlin; William, who died at Vicksburg, PA; Michael who married Miss Susanna Reber; Susanna who married Daniel Kline and removed to Spring Mills, Centre County but died at Aaronsburg; Elizabeth, who married Martin Dreisbach, and died in Lewisburg; and Catharine, wife of Dr. J. P. Seebold, of Stephenson County, IL.”
The CBR article did not mention son George but I think that was because he died so young. And I transcribed an 1843 Union County deed. It listed as Solomon's heirs: John Kleckner, the guardians of George Kleckner deceased, Susannah wife of Daniel Kline, Joseph Kleckner, Elizabeth wife of Martin Dreisbach, Peter Kleckner, Michael Kleckner, William Kleckner and Catherine wife of John P Seebold. This makes it clear which George Kleckner died young and my transcription overlooked Jacob who definitely was a son of Solomon’s.
Parent-Proof notes for Solomon (Spouse 1)
We know from his will that Anthony had sons named John and Solomon by his first wife. It is clear that John and Solomon were close after having moved to Union County. There is no question that these two early Union County residents were these brothers who came from Northampton County.
My Comments notes for Solomon (Spouse 1)
I am tracking Solomon for three reasons: he had a son George who has been confused with our ancestor George, Solomon was Melissa Kleckner’s grandfather and he was deeply involved in the land transaction that brought the Hartman family to Mifflinburg.
His biography is given in “Commemorative Biographical Record of Central Pennsylvania” (CBR) published in 1898.
“Solomon Kleckner came from Northampton County to Union County, first locating in West Buffalo Township, but, after several years passed there, removed to Limestone township. He died August 18, 1837, at the age of seventy-two, and was buried at Mifflinburg. His wife, a Miss Hoover, whom he had married in Northampton County, survived him a few years. By trade Solomon Kleckner was a clock maker, manufacturing the old-fashioned clocks then in use, but he also engaged in farming, and for years owned the mill at New Berlin. Being very successful, he became one of the most substantial men of Buffalo Valley, and at his death left an estate valued at $100,000.”
On 20 Apr 1811, Solomon Kleckner deeded over about 440 acres to Barbara Hartman and John Fogel as the administrators of the estate of John Hartman, deceased, of Northampton County for £4500. The land was to be held in trust for Barbara’s heirs. This contract was actually the fulfillment of an agreement made in September 1810 between Solomon and John Hartman whereby John promised to return by next April and close on the deal to buy this land.
John and Barbara Hartman were our ancestors as their granddaughter married George Kleckner, Solomon’s nephew. The question, though, is what is the back story to this land deal.
