Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for Abraham Martz (P2c)
We know Abraham as David’s son because his brother George named him in his will. Abraham pre-deceased George, the will referred to Abraham’s heirs.
No baptism was recorded at Longswamp for Abraham. Some went unrecorded so it may be his was one of them or perhaps he was born after the family moved to Northumberland County. His age bracket in Census places his birth sometime in the 1780’s. 1785 is just a ballpark estimate.
I know the birth dates of David’s other sons, so Abraham is placed as his third son only based on my ballpark estimate of his 1785 birth. He is designated P2c.
Relocated and Census Tracking notes for Abraham Martz (P2c)
Allen Tallman wrote this about Abraham. "Abraham Martz married in 1808 Mary J Reed, daughter of Christopher Reed. Soon after Abraham and Mary married they removed to Butler County, Ohio. Some say Abraham moved with his father-in-law but Christopher purchased his land in 1807 which would indicate Christopher Reed may have moved earlier. Abraham and Mary later lived on this land and worked it while the country was wild and undeveloped. His father-in-law gave him a free hand on this land and Abraham soon owned it. Upon this place is an old stone house built in 1815 by either Christopher or Abraham. When built, it was considered quite an elegant residence, and was among the best buildings of that day.”
I don’t know where Abraham was living in 1810, perhaps already in Ohio but the 1810 Census for most of Ohio was lost. Abraham was listed in Madison Township, Butler County in 1820-1840 and then his widow Mary was living there with her married daughter in 1850.
Death and Find-a-Grave notes for Abraham Martz (P2c)
Allen Tallman says Abraham died in 1848. I can’t independently confirm that but it was obviously sometime between the 1840 and 1850 Census based on his presence in the former and absence in the latter.
Abraham is not, as of summer 2015, on find-a-grave.
Known Daughters notes for Abraham Martz (P2c)
He may have had other daughters but only one survived him. She was Sarah, wife of John Eckhart, known from being mentioned in her Uncle George’s will and also because her mother was living with her in the 1850 Census after Abraham had died.
Known Sons notes for Abraham Martz (P2c)
My transcript of the property division of George Martz named his two heirs as Daniel and Sarah. I have no idea who Daniel was, there is no record of any Daniel in Census in Butler County. On the other hand, there was a David Martz who was listed in Census in Madison Township starting in 1840 and Allen Tallman said the two heirs of Abraham’s were named David and Sarah. I assume Daniel is a transcription error and the property division actually must say David. I have seen those two names mis-transcribed from other documents in other families, sometimes David became Daniel, sometimes Daniel became David.
And along with David and Abraham in Butler County in 1840, there was also a Christian Martz in the same place age 40-50 and a John Martz age 20-30. Christian was still there in 1850 age 56. I have no idea who he was.
I think I do know John, and he too was still there in 1850. From 1850, we learn the names of his family members and there is a close match between this whole family and the one of John Martz who lived in 1860 in Peoria County, IL. John of Peoria is said by Allen Tallman to be the son of David whose wife was the daughter of John Richstine. It all makes sense. When John first moved to Butler County, John Richstine was there himself in addition to Abraham, then John Richstine moved on, John Martz stayed and then by 1860 moved on himself. The slight discordant note is that John Richstine was in Wayne Township, Butler County while John went to Madison Township where Abraham lived. Still I think John of Butler County was John, son of David Martz and Magdalena Schissler.
Parent-Proof notes for Mary J (Spouse 1)
Mary was the daughter of Christopher Reed. She and her husband came to Butler County either with Christopher or soon thereafter.
