The History of Dauphin County gives a biography of Daniel Martz and even though there were four Daniel Martz in the 1850 Census in Dauphin County, I am sure I have correctly identified the one the history book says was the son of John.
The biography says: “Daniel Martz, son of John and Sarah (Powell) Mertz, was born in Berks County, where he received a common school education, and subsequently learned the business of butcher, in which he was engaged the greater part of his life. He came to Dauphin County and lived for a short time in Upper Paxton Township, removing in 1851 to Millersburg, where he was engaged in business for himself as a butcher until the latter part of his life, when he abandoned this calling and for a few years was the proprietor of a store. At the time of his death, he was the owner of two valuable properties. He was one of the founders of the Millersburg Lutheran Church.
Mr. Martz married, 30 Dec 1849, Sarah Seibert, and their children were: Prisiclla A married George D Albert, John married Mary Smith, Jacob Rogers and Malinda E E married Charles Stricken. The death of the father of this family occurred 22 Jan 1895, and that of the mother 20 Feb 1868. Both are buried at Millersburg, the spot being marked by a monument.”
Daniel is designated J3a1.

Relocated and Census Tracking notes for Daniel Martz (J3a1)
There are actually four men named Daniel Martz in Dauphin County in 1850, one of whom is my friend Louis Fackler’s ancestor and another his son. Plus, I think Jacob Martz had a son Daniel.
Finally there is this one J3a1 and his Census history conforms to his biography as given in the county history. He first was in Upper Paxton and then always in Millersburg after that.

Known Sons notes for Daniel Martz (J3a1)
In the 1850 Census, there was only one son, John, age 1. He continued to live with his parents through the 1870 Census. There are 107 John Martz (or similar) in the 1880 Census born in about 1849. Even when I restrict the search to just those born in Pennsylvania, I don’t immediately recognize this John. He is not designated since I am unable to track him after 1870.
Normally, I would not concern myself with any sons born later but in this case, I do designate and track son Jacob Rogers who was born in 1851 but who, with his unique name, and “papers in his possession” is a key person of this family.
