My Comments notes for Boyd Fisher (Spouse 1)
I have corresponded at great length with Boyd's granddaughter Pat Mertz Esswein (my third cousin) to finally convince her that our ancestor Philip Mertz was a different man than John Philip Mertz son of John Henry.
Jack Mertz was not the only Northumberland Mertz researcher active in the 1960’s-1980’s and perhaps earlier. All of them, to a man, believed that our Philip was the son of John Henry. It was the family tradition passed among themselves and presented in lecture form at the George Peter Mertz family reunions held annually at Lithia Springs.
I am in contact with some true descendants of John Henry Mertz and I kid them that our family helped pay for the big monument at Mertz Church honoring John Henry Mertz out of the mistaken belief that he was our ancestor and that in return John Henry’s descendants should erect a large monument to John David Mertz at Longswamp Reformed Church. So far no takers.
Pat Mertz Esswein says that her grandfather believed, based on this family tradition, that we came from the same place where John Henry came from and that he went there after World War I and there met the woman he would marry -- Maria Altmann.
