The fact that he is the immediate next door neighbor of Jacob Marks in Wayne Township, Erie County in 1840 and the fact that in Joseph's bible, Jacob is denoted Jacob Sr. makes me think this is Jacob Jr. He is designated N1c1.

He was Jacob H Marks in 1840 in Wayne Township and then I find a Jacob Mertz age 40 living in Crawford County, PA in 1850 who was born in New York. His wife is Hannah -- and daughter Fidelia age 18 and son Jacob 13 are among their children. Then in 1860 there was a Jacob H Mertz age 49 present back in Wayne Township who was born in New York -- now with a wife name Sylva and the only child present was James age 10.
