Research notes for James Cretin
A lot of Cretins took the 1778 Loyalty Oath including: James Creighton, James Cretin, Patrick and John Cretin and (another?) John Cretin.

From Becky: “James Cretin was listed as administrator of the estate of Rachel Cretin on 4 September 1780. James Cretin was also a trustee for the estate of Donn Connolly.  His will was written 20 Feb 1791 and probated on 25 Mar 1800.”
My Comments notes for James Cretin
I cannot prove and have become quite skeptical that this James Cretin was the father of Robert. I think there was another man of that name who was Robert’s father. I know James was one of three sons of John Cretin and Internet family trees suggest this relationship but there seems to be no evidence to support it. But just in case new facts emerge and provide some evidence to connect Robert to the earlier Cretins of Harford County, I will leave these people in my database.

James was the son of John Cretin and Martha Lynch. Martha’s Lynch ancestors include Patrick Lynch and his father Robuck. Patrick Lynch married Martha Bowen and Martha’s Bowen ancestors include Jonas Jr. and Jonas Sr. This branch of our family tree could also lead to John Carraway, Nathaniel Henchman and/or Lewis Bryan -- all very early settlers of Colonial Maryland. So, if it is ever proven that Robert was the son of James, then all of these people count as our ancestors, otherwise they are not.

John and Martha Cretin had three sons: Patrick, James and John. We can only bracket Robert’s age -- he was 45+ in 1810 (thus born before 1765), 26-45 in 1820 but there is no way that is right, 60-70 in 1830 (thus 1760-1770) and 70-80 in 1840. His daughter Delilah was born in 1790. If we say Robert was born in 1765, that seems to rule out all of John Cretin’s sons as being the father of Robert. Patrick was born in 1746 but apparently didn’t marry until 1783 and John and James were both born apparently after 1750.

Now it’s possible that a son born in, say, 1752, had a child in 1771 who in turn had a child in 1790. They would each have been 19 when they married and had a child. Make one of them 18 and the other could have been 20. It’s possible but just seems unlikely to me.

There is one more thing I know about James Cretin that seems to rule him out as Robert’s father. At some point in the late 1700’s he moved to Emmitsburgh, Maryland in Frederick County where he died in 1805. He left a will and mentioned: wife Lucy (probably a second wife), sister Sarah Hunter, nieces Elizabeth and Martha daughters of his brother Patrick, nephew John Coskery and Lucy’s former husband Richard Jenning. There is absolutely no mention whatsoever of any children of his own.
