Parent-Proof notes for 4G GF Johannes Kleckner
We know from his will that Anthony had sons named John and Solomon by his first wife. The Francis S Fox article in “PA Genealogical Magazine” listed John born 1750 as the eldest son of Anton and said he moved to Mifflinburg.
Relocated notes for 4G GF Johannes Kleckner
IMMIGRANT. Francis Fox gave quite a detailed history of John, son of Anton. He said he was born 12 Aug 1750 in Germany and came to America with his parents. He moved to Mifflinburg about 1792 or 1793 and died there 21 Sep 1839. We know his father came to America in 1753, so obviously Johannes was born in Germany. The family settled in Northampton County. Then when Johannes was in his forties, married with a growing family, he moved his family to the Mifflinburg area, in about 1792 or 1793.
Census History notes for 4G GF Johannes Kleckner
1790. I don’t know where John is, even taking account that the spelling may have been Cleckner or a variation of that.

In 1800, I think he is one of two men in West Buffalo Twp, North’d Co. Both are named John Clarkner. Both are over 45. In one household, the oldest female is 16-26, in the other the oldest is 26-45.

1810. John Kleckner, Northumberland, West Buffalo Twp. There are two to choose from, both 45+ with wife 45+ and a son 10-15. One is a "stiller", the other a farmer. John the stiller has sufficient sons to be the right one. Neighbors are Solomon and David Kleckner.

It is clear from later records that one of the John Kleckners of 1800 and 1810 is really in that part of West Buffalo Township that will become Hartley Township when it is created in 1811. So the confusion between the two men disappears after then.

1820 and 1830. He is in West Buffalo Twp.
Research notes for 4G GF Johannes Kleckner
In the published research, it says: ”John Stephen Kleckner served in the Revolutionary War. He was born in 1750 in Germany, came to America at 3 years old with his parents, married in 1776 in Northampton where he was a tavern keeper in Allen Township arid then moved to Union County. The Kleckners were in the fur business upon their arrival in Union County.” I believe they are talking about our ancestor John Kleckner and I do not think his name was John Stephen.

Elsewhere it says he purchased 600 acres of land in Buffalo Valley in 1785.

In the Central PA Marriages book, it says John Kleckner of Union Co married in 1778 Anna B Koch of Northampton. I do not think that means he was already a resident of Union Co by 1778.

There was another John Kleckner who died in Union County in 1829. He was of Hartley Twp. His will was written 6 Apr 1829 and proved 21 Apr 1829. It mentioned wife Sarah, sons William (eldest), George, Isaac and Abraham and sons-in-law George Spangler, James McColley, John Cuplin, Joseph Swarm and John Filos (Fries?).

I have a copy of John’s will from the Union County Courthouse. It was written 1 May 1835 and proved 12 Oct 1839. He was of West Buffalo Twp. His will mentions wife Barbara. Item. He designates certain furniture and livestock for her. He says she may continue to live in the east end of their house and have use of the kitchen. “I do order and direct that my Executors hereinafter named shall put out to interest the sum of two thousand dollars and the interest thereof to be paid to Barbara Hartman by my Executors yearly and every year during her natural life and it is my will that after the decease of the said Barbara Hartman the money which will be due the heirs of the said Barbara Hartman is to be paid out of the above mentioned two thousand dollars.” He mentions son John, daughter Christina w/o Matthias Snook, son-in-law John Heckman who was intermarried with daughter Elizabeth, grandchildren Sarah, John, Elizabeth, Catherine, George, Mary, Peter, Daniel and Rebeecca Heckman, daughter Barbara wife of Peter Pontius, daughter Margaret w/o Jonas Hartman, son Joseph’s children, son Anthony, son George, son Elias and son David. Elias to have use of the Blacksmith shop and tools. The inventory showed assets of about $10,000, not including his land.

I don’t know who Barbara Hartman was.

Anton Glockner’s Nov 1790 burial was noted in the Schoenersville Church records -- he was 1 year, 5 months old, s/o John and A Barbara.
My Comments notes for 4G GF Johannes Kleckner
John’s estate file showed monetary wealth, not including his land, of $10,000, much of it in the form of notes representing amounts owed him by his various children. In the list of his assets, I thought this item was interesting: “five shares of the Bellefonte, Aaronsburg, Youngmanstown (original name of Mifflinburg) Turnpike Company” which were valued at $50. I think he was a fairly wealthy man for his time.

Fox said he married Barbara Koch daughter of Jacob and Sarah 1 Jun 1778 in Allen Township, Northampton County. I believe her father was named John, not Jacob; the only name I have ever seen for him is John and I have found him in any number of records.
Discrepant Facts notes for 4G GF Johannes Kleckner
This man, the son of Johann Anton and father of George, born in 1750 and died in 1839 -- is said in several Internet Family Trees to have had the name John Stephen Kleckner. But he was not John Stephen, he was John (or Johannes). In tax records, in Census, in church records, in his will and on his tombstone -- his name was John. The confusion perhaps comes from the fact that Johann Anton had a brother John Stephen.

There is a medal on his grave indicating service in the Revolutionary War. But Francis Fox believes it was most likely his younger cousin John, son of John Stephen, who served. In fact, there is evidence they both may have served. John, son of John Stephen in the Berks County Militia and Johannes, son of Anton, in Capt Adam Clendennan’s unit that was raised mainly in Allen Township

Parent-Proof notes for Anna Barbara (Spouse 1)
The best proof of the identity of her parents is that her mother’s will refers to her as the wife of John Kleckner. In addition, on 24 Mar 1782, John Kleckner and wife Barbara baptized son John, born 2 Dec 1781, at Zion’s Lutheran Church where the Koch family worshipped and the sponsors were Daniel Koch (Barbara’s brother) and Elisabeth.

On 24 Oct 1802, John and Barbara also baptized son David, born 20 Jul 1802, in the same church and the sponsors were George “Roth” and wife Elisabeth. I strongly suspect it was George Koch. In any event, this baptism is pretty interesting since John and Barbara had many years earlier moved to Mifflinburg.
Research notes for Anna Barbara (Spouse 1)
According to the Internet Family Tree on the Kleckner family, Anna Barbara Koch was the daughter of John born 1718 in Germany and died 1782 in Allen Twp, Northampton Co, PA. His wife was Maria Sarah Dreher. She died in 1794 in Unity Township, Westmoreland County. (She probably removed there with a grown son or daughter and their family after her husband died and her other children moved on.)

Her marriage date comes from Charles Fisher and it is probably correct as when her father wrote his will in 1777, she appears to have been single and then when her mother wrote her will in 1791, she was married.
My Comments notes for Anna Barbara (Spouse 1)
As if it is not problem enough with multiple John and George Kleckners to keep track of, both John and Solomon married women named Barbara. But we know our Barbara from her 1849 will which named many of the same children as her husband’s 1839 will.

Anna Barbara’s will mentioned daughters Barbara, wife of Peter Pontius, and Margaret, wife of Jonas Hartman. It mentioned grandchildren Anna Barbara, Elizabeth and Sarah -- all daughters of David, Barbara daughter of George, Barbara wife of Levi Gonser and Rebecca wife of Andrew Iddings. And it mentioned great-grandchild Harriet daughter of Mrs. Sarah Wolfe. Son George was named Executor.

Her estate file showed that she owned “ten shares of the Lewisburg Bridge Company” which she bequeathed to daughter Barbara.
Children Names notes for Anna Barbara (Spouse 1)
We know the children of Johannes and Anna Barbara from their wills and from church records documented by Francis Fox. Fox also determined where and when many of them died. In addition to George (and Daniel who died before his parents’ wills were written), they were:

John born 2 Dec 1781. Fox does not indicate whatever happened to this John. He cannot be the extra John in early Union County records since that John was age 45+ in both 1800 and 1810 and his grown sons appear in Census by 1820. The extra John is much older than Anthony’s son John.

Joseph born 15 Nov 1783. He apparently pre-deceased his father.

Anthony whose 2 Jul 1793 birth was recorded upon his baptism at Dreisbach Church near Mifflinburg. He was the Anthony Kleckner age 56 living in Logansville, Clinton Co, PA in the 1850 Census. According to Fox, he died 1 Sep 1860 at Loganton, Clinton County as did several of his sisters. Anthony married Sarah Munich. The burial records of Christ Lutheran in Shoenersville say Anthony s/o John and A Barbara Gloeckner buried 4 Nov 1790 age 1yr 5m 2d.

Elias born 8 Aug 1799, died 30 Mar 1861 and David born 1 Aug 1802. They jointly inherited their father’s blacksmith tools.

Maria Christina born 19 Oct 1785. She died 12 Feb 1845 at Loganton, wife of Matthias Snook.

Elizabeth born 3 Mar 1787. (I found Catherine Elizabeth b.3 Apr 1787 in records of Christ Lutheran, Schoenersville) She died at Loganton 1 Aug 1833, pre-deceasing her father. She married John Heckman and their children named in her father’s will were Sarah, John, Elizabeth, Catherine, George, Mary, Peter, Daniel and Rebecca.

Anna Barbara born 2 Aug 1791. She was the wife of Peter Pontius.

Margaret born 1795. She was the wife of Jonas Hartman.
