Timeline notes for David David
abt 1720. David David was born. His birth date is an outright guess based on his life’s biography. I know that his father was Philip David. I have no idea the name of his mother nor am I certain where he was born. In my profile of his father, I speculate the family may be of Welsh origin, but even if true, whether either or both of them were born there or Anerica, I don’t know.

Philip David was in Wilmington by 1738 when he bought a town lot in downtown Newton — the name of the town soon to be changed to Wilmington. The lot, the way I figure it, was on the Suth side of Market Street between Front and Second. It was halfway up that block. About where the Dixie Grill.

There is no question David was Philip’s son as he was named as such in Philip’s will and also named as such in a deed after David died when his daughters sold one of Philip’s town lots.

1730’s and 1740’s. David is named any number of times in a book documenting the earliest history of Wilmington.

There was an article in 2001 in the Wilmington Star-News on the 125th anniversary of the Temple of Israel and t said David David bought land in Wilmington (a year before it was incorporated) in 1738 making him the first documented Jew here. I believe that is wrong in two ways: it was Philip who bought that land which was then later owned by David AND I do not think David David was Jewish. I think the fact that he subscribed to a pew for the construction of St James Episcopal church in 1751 puts the lie to that and I believe the newapaper writer who made that ststement was basing that idea on the fact that by 2001 there was in Wilmington a prominent Jewsih family with the David surname.

In 1750, David David requested that a survey be made for him of a 100 acre tract lying between his land on the North East Cape Fear River and Burgaw. And then in 1761, he and wife Ann sold the original tract he had received from his father, no doubt thn moving to the 640 acre tract he had bought on the Welsh Tract — further North from his home plantation — in 1758.

There are several books in NHCL covering early court records of NHC. Philip David and later David David are often jurors and involved in several court actions. Abigail Lamb and William Lamb also appear quite frequently. David died 3 Mar 1775 according to Sampson County Heritage book.

1779. A deed sets forth that David David died 3 Mar 1775 intestate possessed of a town lot on Market Street bought by his father Philip in 1737. The lot descended to his two daughters (the inference being his only children) and now, they, Abigail Lamb, wife of William and Jane Overhison, the wife of John.

1793. There is a survey of land for William and Thomas Lamb, the survey specifically notes that it was on the North East River opposite David David’s landing.

1790. No persons named David appear in New Hanover County,

New Hanover County land records, grantee. There are but three entries for anyone with surname David before 1885:

1. Book AB, page 196. 1738. Michael Higgines to Philip David.
2. Book C, page 172. 1748. Philip David’s will with David David as Executor was recroded.
3. Book D, page 416. 1759. John Cooke to David David.

1. 26 July 1738. in North Carolina, New Hanover precinct, Michael Higgines of Newton in Cape Fear of the aforesaid province, merchant, to Philip David, planter, of the same place. A town lot on Market Street fronting 50 feet on Market St and then 66 feet deep. The descirption is a little confusing plus it’s not clear if Market Street extended to the River or rather began at Front Street but my guess would be Philip’s lot began 125 feet up Market from Front which would put it betwen Front snd Secnd today.

2. Philip wrote his wlll 5 Aug 1747. He gave his land on the North East River “where he now lives” and he splits his town lot which has four houses on it between his son David David and his daughter Mary McKeithan. [His will was also recorded in Craven County. New Hanover was formed from Craven in 1729. There is no deed in Craven with the David surname but it makes me think that Philip David might have been in the Cape Fear area befor 1729.

3. On 1 Sep 1758, John Cooke of Dupin County deeds to David David, planter of New Hanover County, 640 acres (the lower half of a tract of 1280 acres), at the Welsh Tract on the East Side of the North East River in New Hanover County. [The Welsh Tract was originally settled by Welshmen. It lies about half way between Burgaw and Wallace. Whether this is an indication David David was Welsh, I don’t know, but I suspect he was.]

New Hanover County land records, grantor. There are but four entries for anyone with surname David before 1900. One was another reference to Philip David’s will (Philip the grantor, David the grantee). Here are the other three:

1. Book D page 14. 1753. David and Ann David lease to Alexander McKeithan for the town lot.
2. Book D page 15. 1753. David and Ann David mortgage to Alexander McKeithan for the town lot.
3. Book D, page 509. 7 Feb 1761. David and Ann David to John Williams. A 640 acre tract on the West side of the North East River “over against the three islands above Rocky Point” which Timothy Bloodworth patented in 1737 and then at some point deeded it to Philip David who left it, by will, to his son David David.

North Carolina Land Grant Files, surname David.

On 7 Apr 1750, a survey of 100 acres was authorized for David David described as lying between the land he now lives on on the West side of the North East Cape Fear River and Burgaw.

Then on 28 Jan 1760, Alexander McKeithan and his (unnamed) wife of Bladen County sell their share of that lot to Alexander Ross. Book E, page 56.

Then on 15 Jun 1779, the David David’s daughters sell hjis half of the lot, which that deed says was recorded in book A page 399 except it was book AB page 196.
