Relocated notes for Nathaniel (Spouse 1)
He came to America in 1619. But he was reported as being back in England in 1622 when a major Indian attack took place including directly on Basse's Choice. And, according to a book on the history of Isle of Wight at NHCL, he was counted in the "muster" of VA in 1625 at Basse's Choice at age 35, having come to America in 1622 in the Furtherance, presumably his second crossing this way.
On which trip he brought his family here is not clear, perhaps he was getting them on the second trip.
He is last reported in the records of Isle of Wight in 1631 when he "departed for New England."
An Internet Tree says he died in 1654 in Middlesex, England. So he apparently made at least two round trips from England to Virginia and back.
Research notes for Nathaniel (Spouse 1)
From Isle of Wight county homepage, quoting A Brief History of Isle of Wight County, VA by Col E M Morrison. "The first English settlement in Isle of Wight county was made by Captain Christopher Lawne and Sir Richard Worsley, knight baronet and their associates, viz:Nathaniel Basse, gentleman; John Hobson, gentleman....On April 27, 1619, they arrived at Jamestown, with 100 settlers in a ship commanded by Captain Evans....Many of the early settlers were of cavalier origin, and came from the city of Bristol, England, and its vicinity, and for many years, as shown by old records, the 'Bristol ships' made frequent voyages to this county....On November 21, 1621....Captain Nathaniel Basse and others undertook to establish another plantation..known as 'Basse's Choice'..."
Elsewhere it is told that in 1608 when Captain John Smith crossed the James River to seek food from the Indians, this was the first involvement of Europeans in Isle of Wight County. And presumably, the settlement above was the first real settlement.
In 1629, Nathaniel represented Basse's Choice in the House of Burgesses.
An Internet Tree gives birthplace and that he died in Middlesex, England.
I believe 29 Dec 1589 is his christening date.
Notes for Nathaniel (Spouse 1)
Now we come to John’s father Nathaniel, whose lineage is also a matter of some controversy.
Captain Nathaniel Basse was born before 29 Dec 1589 in London and was buried 3 Jul 1654 in London. He was a military captain (not a sea captain) and seems to have crossed the Atlantic one way or the other almost annually. He helped establish Isle of Wight County in 1619, having arrived on the ship Marygolde. In 1621 he started a plantation called "Basses Choice". This was across the James River from Jamestown.
On Good Friday, 1622, a notorious Indian raid occurred in the James River area killing 347 of the then 1240 English inhabitants. Basses Choice was a target though Nathaniel, at the time, was apparently back in England or on his way back to Virginia, but in any event not in residency. He arrived Virginia a second time on the ship Furtherance (a Bristol ship) in 1622. Nathaniel married Mary Jordan 21 May 1613. In 1629, he represented Basses Choice in the VA House of Burgesses. Nathaniel is last seen in VA in 1631 when he departed for New England and then he reappears only upon his burial in England in 1654.
Mary Jordan was born supposedly before 1600 in England and died 17 Jan 1630 in Norfolk County, VA.
