Jack was one of several Mertz family genealogists who did their work before the advent of computers for either organizing their databases or searching the Internet for knowledge and sources became widely in use.
He was the one I knew best from his occasional visits to our house. And he wrote me, at my request, a wonderful 15 page letter detailing my Mertz ancestors and naming their wives.
