Ralph Fraley Martz cites a letter from Philip D Mertz of Lewistown. He stated that his great-grandfather emigrated from Germany about 100 years ago. (That would be Hans Peter son of John David, so that’s correct except it was 150 years ago). He stated that they settled in Mertztown, Lehigh County (close). He stated that his grandfather was one of seven brothers (correct) and that three of the brothers, including Philip D’s grandfather, came to the Susquehanna near Sunbury. (Actually five of the brothers made that move, maybe three came and then two came later.)

Philip D is designated P4a1d.

From the Mifflin County history: “Philip D Mertz was born 12 Aug 1848 at the old homestead in Derry Township. His first career was teaching in various places including Carroll County, Indiana but in 1873 began farming the homestead, then in 1879 removed to Lewistown and engaged in butchering. In 1883 he returned to the farm which he bought from his father's estate. He married 24 Aug 1876 Susan Muthersbaugh d/o David and Margaret (McLain).”
