Research notes for Jacob Welch
M L Kueker sent me the History of the Phelps and Gorham's Purchase, 1851, by O Turner.
“Jacob Welch came from PA to Dansville, in 1798. He died in 1831. His widow still survives, aged 86 years. His sons: Jacob, Henry and Conrad are residents of Dansville. His daughters became the wives of John Beltz, Peter Labach, William Kercher, and Valentine Hamsher....The part of his farm inherited by his son Conrad Welch embraces the Dansville canal slip and basin.”
My Comments notes for Jacob Welch
Jacob Welsh was listed as a pioneer settler of Steuben County, NY together with Jacob Mertz and Conrad Mertz. Clearly, he became associated with the Mertz family in Berks County with his marriage to Jacob's daughter and then presumably migrated with them first to Northumberland County in about 1785 and then on to NY before 1800.
A man named O Turner wrote a book in 1851 about the history of the settlement of that area of NY State where Jacob Mertz, Conrad Mertz and Jacob Welch ended up. It quoted Conrad Welch, son of Jacob:
“Conrad Welch, a prominent and worthy citizen of Dansville, gave the author some account of the early advent of his father and others: ‘My grandfather, Jacob Martz, resided near Sunbury, North’d Co, PA. The advent of Charles Williamson through that region...created a good deal of interest for the Genesee country. Jacob Martz came out and viewed it, and returning reported so favorably that an emigrant party was soon organized. It consisted of Jacob Martz, his son Conrad Martz, George Shirey, Fredrick Barnhart and Jacob Welch and their families.’ ”
Relocated notes for Jacob Welch
He moved from Berks to Augusta Township and on to New York State in about 1798 with his father-in-law.
Parent-Proof notes for Anna Catherine (Spouse 1)
Her baptism at Longswamp is evidence of the names of her parents.
My Comments notes for Anna Catherine (Spouse 1)
The birth of Anna Catharina Mertz daughter of Jacob and Magdalena was recorded among the baptism records of Longswamp Reformed Church. This is a very important record. She will later marry Jacob Welch and move with him and her parents to New York State in about 1798. Other NY State Mertzes seem to be associated with her as siblings -- namely Eva and Jacob.
